Globe Artichoke (Last Questions .. I hope!)

Hey Thank You all for your help so far. So far I've decided to plant these baby Globe Artichoke plants in my 18" x 18" x 18" pots until they get bigger.

They are tiny plants. Hirts had them mismarked as plants which will produce this year but they are clearly starter plants.

Anyways before I plant them in these containers can I use regular garden soil (Miracle Grow brand) to plant them or should I look for potting soil or regular top soil or ? .

When I plant them I decided to plant one or two an area under an Arbor we built where it will get shade from the afternoon sun but will get late evening sun (not so strong)and I heard that my clay soil would be fine for them? Is this right?

I really appreciate everyone's help ! I love Artichokes and want some successful plants.

For future reference you can just tack these additional questions on to your previous posts and it bumps them right back up to the top. No need to start a new one each time. That way all of your questions and the answers given are tied together and we don't have to search out the previous questions or rehash previously given info.

As to the mix, only soil-less potting mixes are recommended for containers no matter what you are growing in them. No regular garden soil, no Miracle Grow brand Garden Soil only MG Potting Mix, no potting soil and no regular top soil. All of those compact far too much, do not drain effectively in containers, and cause root root.

You'll also find any number of recommendations for potting mixes over on the Container gardening forum here.

As to eventually planting them in straight clay soil? I can't help you with that as I don't have clay. Can only say that from all I have read, those that have to deal with heavy clay soil don't seem to find it good for growing much of anything. The Soil Forum here has many discussions on how to amend clay soils so that they can be used for planting so you might want to do some reading over on that forum too.

PS: I am curious as to why you want to shade these since chokes are full sun lovers?

Thanks Dave,

I thought about tacking onto my other post but I tried that once before and no one ever responded. When I reposted my question it got noticed.

I was told in a previous post that it may be too hot for Artichokes here in Austin, TX and where artichokes grew commercially it is always overcast and cool.

Mine are outside taking advantage of the appropriate temperatures for vernalization. They look pretty similar to last week since the cold has slowed their growth. Supposed to be putting up the hoop house this week, so then I can have them out there. Stuff, yours really should be bigger, mine were started January 17 and 23. I think your container is maybe too shallow. Why not pick the best and give them their own pots? My experience is limited, but I feel like slowing their root growth early on can have bad consequences later. Mine are grown under lights in an unheated plant room without bottom heat (I generally use the bottom heat only for tomatoes and peppers). I guess the temperature in that room is usually near 60ÃÂ°, give or take a bit. Looking back at your pictures, something is off, yours haven't grown but a tiny bit in 3 weeks. Cheers!

There is always a chance.... ;-) But with your description...not a good chance. Go purchase a couple of 2 year old plants (local nursery/around 4.00 each), and you will get at least a couple of Artichokes from them this year, then I would cut them down after Harvest (4" stubs sticking out of the ground), and then let them grow back during the fall (slight chance of a small harvest), and cover them with a tent of Remay (perhaps doubled), and check on them periodically to see if they need another layer of protection from freezing during the winter. You can do this ...it just takes more diligence on your part,if you get a lot of freezing weather.

Hi, Does any one know how to successfully propagate Global Artichokes? I have 5 - 6 small 6" plants that have come from the base of this years plant (now chopped down to ground level as all flower heads have been eaten) but when I went to separate them from the main stem they didn't have any roots and seemed to be taking all their nourishment from the main steam so I don't know what to do. The one that I broke away from the main stem is now jammed in a plant pot with damp soil in the vain hope it might take...... Yes, I'd be interested to know how the Emerald variety does in your area. I know you receive a bit more cold weather than we do, and your hot temps are hotter than ours, but other than that we have similar climes.

where artichokes grew commercially it is always overcast and cool.

I'd really question that since almost 100% of the US crop is grown in Central California and European production is focused in the Mediterranean areas - none of which are noted for being overcast and cool. But that is JMO. Mine sure don't seem to mind the full sun here.

Interesting. I did grow some last year in my garden box and they did really well. No chokes but they were suppose to be 1 year plants though so I didn't expect it.

Anyways maybe I'll try various places and hope for the best.
