Personally I think too many sub forums are confusing and there is always a tendency to not see the sub forums or consider them 'slower' and post to the general forum anyway. There is a tomato, pepper and herb forum, but questions on the veggie forum still come in on these crops.

On the tomato forum there is a sub forum for tomato diseases, but disease questions still get asked on the tomato forum.

I think 'specialty' forums are great, to a point, but after that point it becomes confusing and not really that helpful.

While there are times of the year that certain forums really get hopping, there are usually other times of the year when one can hear an echo in them ;-)

Container Gardening
Pumpkins, Squash & Gourds
Soil, Compost & Mulch
Pests & Diseases
Suggestions?(for new forum ideas and such)

Sometimes you have to go through all the lists to find the forum you need.

There is also already a Squash forum, a Growing from Seed forum, an Alliums forum, and a Harvest forum but people don't use them and post here instead. Adding more forums won't solve the "rush off the front page" problem. ;)

Using the search rather than posting highly redundant posts would help. It would also keep many highly informative posts from purged. But that suggestion never seems to go over well either. ;)

Winter sowing is a great forum that allows people to try and grow veggies from seeds outside that they can't inside based on cold and stratification requirements or even the blooming season.

I guess I imagined the Soil/Compost/Mulch, Container Gardening, and Pests & Diseases to be less specific to veggies. Didn't know about the Squash one...its not linked at the top of the veggie forum.

A *lot* of people don't know about all the forums here. You can even find a 'hot topics' forum where you discuss how McCain is too old, Hillary is too female and Obama is too black if you really want to (personally I stay away from posting there ;-). Take a look at the main page and scroll through the listing of forums sometime.

You will be surprised at what you find.

I prefer to keep it simple....and not spread out all over who knows where.

The Pumpkin, Squash and Gourd forum might get more traffic if there is a link from the vegetable forum. Also, it might get more traffic if it incorporated all cucurbits.

I think a number of people may come to this forum(and others)by way of a 'google' search and just make a desktop shortcut without knowing that there's a main page.
My shortcut is to the main forum page and it seems easy to me because the forums I visit most often are always highlighted.

Booberry, I agree with you about the P,S&G forum. I would like to see cucurbits included there, too.
