Pre-existing Retaining Wall Question

Hello everyone,

I have been reviewing questions about building a retaining wall, but I have a question about one that pre-exists.

Our home has a retaining wall in the back. It is on the bottom of a hill and about 20 -30 feet behind the house. It is a 5 foot high retaining wall. It is made of timbers and seems to be in good condition, built by the builder 20 years ago. I love how it looks, it is an attractive aspect because the property above has great potential for growing plants. It does have trees on the hill and other plants and it is a steep hill with houses at the top, although you really can't see them.

Is it something we will have to eventually replace? If so, how much are we looking to spend. If not, how do we maintain the wall to make sure it does not disinegrate or rot?

Any advice would be helpful!
