How important is drainage for tomatoes?

Do I HAVE to drill holes in my 18 gallon rubbermaid containers????

I might want to use them for something else one day. Drilling holes would mean "forever".

I live in Washington DC, where it gets really hot, so the few container tomatoes I have with drainage holes tend to wilt rather quickly.

I put my heirloom tomatoes in their containers on May 23rd and they seem to be growing well. All have had flowers and most have fruit which has set. I've been watching them all for yellow leaves, and none have yellowed.

Some have suffered from mild to moderate blossom drop, but the same plants also have fruit on them, so I think the blossom drop is related to the hot, 95 degree days we had about a week or two ago.

So, do I have to drill holes?
