How important is crop rotation?

Hello everyone!

I have two square foot garden beds with 88 squares total. This year, I'm growing 16 tomatoes up poles and 17 pepper plants (and other things). We talked to someone recently who really emphasized rotating crops from year to year because of the diseases that stay in the soil. Well, I planted all the peppers in one bed and all the tomatoes in the other. Of course, I still have a lot of non-nightshade family plants in each bed, but it is a bit difficult to plan next years garden because the peppers and tomatoes are spread out throughout each bed right now.

Do you all faithfully rotate crops? What if some of next year's tomatoes are rotated but some are planted in a pepper spot?

Thanks to everyone for any suggestions.
