Has anyone grown successfully pepper mint from the seeds?

Has anyone grown successfully pepper mint from the seeds?

If yes, how did you succeed in doing it? I have been trying for the 3rd week and without any success. They just don't give any sprouts. I presoaked in water some tiny seeds one day ago and still there are no signs of any sprouting. Should I wait more and all the seeds are just sterile? May it be so that among all the majority of the seeds only one or two are fertile? Or all of them are sterile 100%?

I rue the day I planted peppermint in my garden! Fifteen years ago when I bought the property but did not live on it I planted a peppermint. Today I am weeding it out of a acre size garden, where it certainly spread from seed. If I had a plant with sterile seed I would consider myself blessed. Al

So is there any hope that some seeds are fertile in my seeds packet? Till now none of the seeds has proved to be fertile, all of the sown ones seem to be sterile?

By the way how strong is the pepper mint aroma? I bought once for culinary purposes some mint stalks, but they had almost no aroma of mint, just some greenary scent. The market seller told me later that for culinary purposes some special kind of mint should be bought, which are bought very quickly by restaurants etc. Does your pepper mint have a strong mint aroma?

I've just collected some Lantana seeds and was looking for info on how to germinate them. I found the following in a scientific paper from Australia. It seems to confirm the experiences of members of this and other GW forums, that germination tends to be low, but can be improved by removing the pulp from the berries and providing sufficient light and heat (as would be likely in Texas as opposed to Massachusetts or Michigan): "Lantana seeds need high light conditions for germination and early growth (Gentle and Duggin 1997b; Duggin and Gentle 1998, in Day et al. 2003), and seedlings are unlikely to survive beneath parent bushes. The germination rate of lantana is low under both laboratory and field conditions, with estimates of 4Â20% (Graaff 1987) and 44.5% (Duggin and Gentle 1998, in Day et al. 2003). Germination rates increased from ten per cent to 46 per cent when the fleshy pulp was manually removed from the seed. This higher germination rate is comparable to that obtained from seeds collected from the faeces of wild birds. Seeds germinate at any time of the year given sufficient soil moisture, with most seed germinating after the first summer storms in northern Australia (Parsons and Cuthbertson 2001, in Day et al. 2003). Mint? Go to the grocery store, buy a bunch of mint for a dollar or two. (Make sure it looks alive! Not wilted but vigorous.) take a 4" deep tray, fill with moist playsand (DO NOT MAKE MUD!...roots need oxygen). Pop pencil holes in the sand, drop in diagonally cut stems and cover with a humidity dome or a sealed clear plastic bag. Use sunlight or daylight artificials. No rooting hormone required. In 2-3 weeks you'll have more mint to transplant than you'll ever need. If you want the roots to get big...leave plants in the sand, remove dome and water with with a super diluted nutrient supplement like Masterblend or MiracleGro This technique will work with almost all fresh cut (perennia) herbs.

I'm not sure who I received the Heliopsis I planted, but I did get germination. Regarding coneflower seed - I've had the best luck winter sowing coneflower and so-so indoor sowing. I've read in some of my books that coneflowers need a cold treatment so outdoor wintersowing is a great way to go. I've also found that columbine, delphinium and some others need the cold treatment too. I store these types of seeds also in the fridge and/or freezer.

Ever grown seeds from grocery store bought peppers?

Just happened to come across this post. I'd say 95% of my peppers were grown from store bought fruits. They have been productive and haven't given me much problems except for when I brought them outside from indoor growing. One of my sweet bell peppers is fully loaded, it has 6 or 7 giant fruit on it and 1 of them is starting to turn colour now. Here is a picture of my scotch bonnet also grown from store bought fruit.... Unfortunately I didn't put it in a good location because it's surrounded by green beans and a couple corn plants and fava beans.... The good news is the fava beans are almost ready so they'll be gone within a week, two max.

Where did you get your seeds? Maybe you could get your money back. Seeds sold as 'peppermint' are usually some type of mint cross. Peppermint is typically grown from cuttings. And yes, it has a strong aroma, especially when you crush a leaf. It is also invasive as Al mentioned, so you should contain it somehow. Hop over to the Herbs forum to get more info on mints...the folks there are extremely helpful(not that they aren't great here,too!):D

I grew some "chocolate peppermint" a few years ago from seed from a catalog. When growing small, difficult to germinate seeds, I use ParkStarts from Parkseeds (you can Google them). They're sponge plugs for starting difficult to start seeds -- they work very well and they're not that expensive considering how well they work.
