So...my Mom wants me to get a smart phone (funny story)

I posted this in my local forum but thought the Veggie growers might get a kick out of it -- My B-day's coming up and my Mom who is a recent convert to smart phones is pushing for me to get one as well. I'm usually home and can hop on my PC but I'll admit they are nice to have on trips.

I have one of those older small clamshell flip phones that are getting harder and harder to find and I have been very hard on it. It gets knocked out of my magnetic belt case, dropped on gravel, left out in the cold if I take it off while working in the greenhouse, driven over (yes, the tires of my truck actually ran over it!) when the phone once fell out of my truck door unbeknownst to me. All kinds of dreadful things.

I've been trying to explain this to her and she just tells me "oh it'll be fine, you can just get an otter box for it!" Well I may have finally gotten through to her when I just told her this story:

I tilled up the other half of my veggie garden a few days ago, tilling leaves into the soil. My tiller vibrates my body all over the place and it's hard to steer, especially in semi-wet sinking soil. After finishing up and heading in for the day just before dark my hand brushed against my phone case which was still attached to me only I realized there was no phone in it. I checked all of the normal places one might lose a phone....your pants pocket, the car, the greenhouse, etc....My husband kept calling it.....nothing. Finally a horrible realization hit me and I told him "follow me and bring your phone". We walked outside to the veggie garden and he called it.....the garden started faintly ringing lol. I ran through the gate and started trying to hone in on the sound. Finally got close and started digging in with my bare hands like someone frantically looking for buried treasure. Found my phone 5 inches deep nicely tilled into the soil with the other ammendments. The front had scrape marks from where the tines had obviously come in contact with it. Amazingly they did not destroy it!

A rough and tumble gardener like me should definitely not be allowed to own a smart phone lol.

LOL, just saw this thread was popping up again. Buford, I also FREQUENTLY use the timer feature when I'm out using drip irrigation, soaker hoses, etc....I've got so many all over the place that it's impractical right now to buy timers for every single one. That's a great idea about the zippered or velcro pockets. I will only wear blue jean pants in the garden, even in hot weather just because I'm always on my knees so pants and sometimes knee pads protect from sharp objects. And I don't want to contend with bug bites either which they prevent. I'm pretty handy though, I bet I could sow on my own zippered pocket if I couldn't find any cheapo jeans that had it already. Herboil, that's an interesting theory about the cell phone waves. I had heard that idea before several years ago when people were starting to realize the honey bee populations were dropping. I hadn't heard much about it lately.

thanks everyone, sorry I'm so slow to respond, the computer has been acting up. I do think she knew something was happening on Tues (her brother's funneral) I usually have one "talking time" with her over the summer when I'm home usually she just answers questions I ask her but it's something. It used to be that we could plan on once a week, then once a month but now it's down to a few times a year. I can only hope her mind is busy thinking and that she doesn't realize she's just lying in a fetal position for hours on end. We cherish when she does talk. When she first started getting forgetful she made the comment to me that she didn't want to say or do anything to embarrass us girls and I think she just shut down with that fear in her head. She's such a proud woman and would hate the person she has become. Thanks for all the comments. Diane

My mom LOVES babies. I mean LOVES babies. At family gatherings we tell young mothers "Don't let Aunt Scarlet get the baby or you won't see it for the rest of the night" LOL. She also SNEAKS them things. Her favourites are chocolate icing and whipped cream. Or giving them a rib bone (cleaned, and not chokeable size) to gum. Once I found DD happily sucking on the outside of a crab leg. I was about to get upset, then my mom looks at me in wide eyed innocence and says "Well, it's not a PICKY one!" - like that explains it all LOL. My mother was a nurse, so we often had dinner conversation that was not for the faint hearted or weak stomached. One of the first times DH ate with my family, he almost spit out his food when she told a story about a friend at work that does those parties, with the "novelty" items. She was driving a jeep with no top and got into an accident, flipping several times. At the same time, these "novelty" items were flinging all over the road. After the accident the police were trying to gather up her things, and they kept walking up to her and saying "Ma'am? Is this your (expletive)?" and the girl didn't know whether to say yes or no ROFLMAO! Of course, my mom used the actual words. MIL won't even say the word "ovary" in mixed company. Poor DH nearly had a heart attack LOL.

After my marriage broke up 5 years ago and I was forced back into the dating world in my mid 40's, and started hitting the dating sites, I heard this complaint from women over and over...in their posts, in communicating with them, etc. "All guys in their 40s want a 25 year old bimbo..." stuff like that. WTF? Sure there are your screwballs out there who find someone 20 years younger then they are, but they are usually either a) very rich, or b) don't have their heads screwed on right. Seriously, most men are not looking for someone out of their "age range". I went out with many women before I met the gal I've been dating for 3+ years now (she is 43, I am 47). Many of them I simply was not interested in after meeting them....either not physically attracted to them, no chemistry, or just at different places in our lives (I had young kids, some of the 40 - 45 year old ladies I dated had kids who were out of the house already...I didn't think that would be a good match, as my daily life revolves around my kids most days. I am sure after I either 'disappeared' after the first date, or kindly said I wasn't interested in a second, if asked, that some of those ladies probably used the "oh he's probably looking for a young barbie doll" rational. Same way so many guys probably use the "oh, she probably wants a rich guy" or "bad boy" excuse.

It does sound like the phone you have is the best phone for you!

If you do want a smart phone, you might look for a G1 on ebay. They are antiques, now, but I dropped mine on the concrete at least once a day for the four years I had it. I did have a hard shell for it... went through one of those every 6 months or so. Still, /nearly/ indestructible :).

i am not sure you can rototill them, though.

NijaJones, that's a good tip about an older generation phone. Will consider it.

Bugbite, I actually HATED writing in English/literature classes during school, go figure! But I do enjoy songwriting.

Sunnibel, my husband is actually disabled so I don't want to be without my cellphone. Currently he can still walk some but he was born with spinal problems, had multiple surgeries growing up and has unpredictable nerve pain and muscle deficits. His legs will experience sudden periods of weakness. And he is still a young man. I worry about him falling or something happening to him so neither one of us is ever without our cell phones, even if he is inside and I'm right outside. That way he can call me if he needs help with something. If this was not the case I would take my phone off before doing heavy duty gardening but unfortunately that's not an option.

I've done something similar, but didn't till it in! I have a sitting area that I now put phone(s), glasses, water shed off shirt, book or whatever. The chiro says I can only work 15 mins at a time anyway, so I'm in the habit of putting it all in one place. Works for me! Nancy

Ah, I'm sorry to hear your husband has to face such challenges. My niece has CP and she is continuing to go through surgeries that may allow her to walk- she says thank goodness for the internet! Anyhow, have you ever considered walkie talkies? My parents live in a cell-phone poor area and they like to walk in the woods a lot so they got walkie talkies. They also use them to communicate between barn and house. Just another possible solution for when you have to replace your phone someday. Cheers!

Sunnibel, you know what? That never occurred to me lol. We've never used walkie talkies at all growing up and they just weren't even on my radar. That's probably a much cheaper solution to keeping in contact with hubby, then if they get damaged it's not so expensive to replace. You may have just solved my dilemma.....then I could get a smart phone and leave it in the house or my car while I'm outside.

Good Lord, why didn't I think of that!

You are a very lucky person or have a really tough phone OP!

I have been through 6 clam-shells over the last 6 years. Thank goodness they are work phones.

I have to carry mine all of the time, I'm on call 24/7/365.

I work in waste-water treatment. I have dropped them in ponds, no way to recover. They have fell an equivalent of 4 stories in our buildings and shattered to pieces. I dropped one and ran over it with a tractor, and another one met it's death under my lawn mower!

Thats why you should all get Google Glass as soon as it becomes available to the public. Will be very difficult to not notice if it falls off your face. =)

Wertach: you say wastewater, I think nitrosomonas foaming, egg-shaped digester, and activated sludge... Even if you could get your phone back, would you want it after a dunk in that? ;)

Kids just never think ahead. you should have just watered it and see if it came up true to seed or hybred.
