Soil mixture for containers

I checked several other postings and havn't found my answer yet. I have an old clawfoot bathtub in my flower garden. I filled the tub about 1/4 full of rocks. The garden store said to use a mixture of topsoil and compost. Ten 40lb. bags later my impatients are still just sitting there. The soil mix seems so heavy. The roots aren't going anywhere and the flowers are not spreading out. The tub is in a shady area and I water enough and applied flowering plant food. There is good drainage from through the rocks and out the tub's drain hole. My question: Can someone tell me EXACTLY what soil mixture to use? No luck so far with impatients in my tub container.
