My yard needs help! [Photos included]

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions on what to put (and where) in my garden. I bought and moved into a house last summer in urban CT- we have a big empty yard in back that needs major help. Right now it's just dirt (we've started pulling up the weeds and sifting out all the broken glass already). The soil is really rich and tends toward a sandy texture. We've been told it's great though.

I'd like to start a compost, and to garden organically and using mostly native CT plants. I'd also like to start a vegetable garden. Is this too ambitious for a newcomer for one spring/summer?

A couple things I had in mind to plant (after doing some reading): VA creeper (for that unsightly wall) and trumpet honeysuckle (along the chainlink fence).

My biggest problem is that I'm totally new at this and don't know much about planning. The photos were taken last June when we first moved in- that's not grass on the ground, but about 20 different types of weeds! The scaffolding is going to be gone soon, too.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just don't know where to start.
