I feel for ya. I hate snow, frankly. It's so tiresome and inconvenient. Once every few years we get a "coastal clipper" here and it's incredible on the first day, and then I remember why I don't live in VT.......

Sherryls, it's good you are staying positive. You can see on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) site that Montpelier has gained ONE Growing Degree Day. (Burlington may be still waiting for that #1.) But heck, if they'd been measuring from a base temperature for spinach instead of corn - you'd already be marching along towards a growing season.

My gardens outside of Spokane Washington are probably in exactly the same situation heat-wise.

Spring?! The neighbor's grandkids were sledding yesterday!

I'm a teacher, and we've had 9 (count 'em, NINE!) snow days this winter! I'm wondering just how I'm going to get my garden going if I'm in school until June 24th!

Spinich is hard to plant in frozen ground under 6 plus inches of icy hard crusty snow that you cant shovel. So if it was warm enough, which it has not been since the days are at the most 40 degrees and the nights have stayed in the teens,you could not get at our dirt if you wanted to. LOL. So spinach will have to wait until the end of May like always when our hard frost time is over. But I will get my seeds started next weekend. I am looking forward to that. I am going to pick up a few shallow clear totes to put my peat cups in so I can put them out in the sunshine during the day and them put them in under the lights in the shed at night. Wish I had a greenhouse but I just bought a amish type sales shed for the farm and that broke the bank for a while. (12x24) But it has lights and big windows for lots of light on not so nice days. This is my first year using it as a makeshift greenhouse. Well, back to the spring cleaning! Have a great day. Going to be 41 today and sunny. MELT SNOW MELT !

This is the winter that will not quit. I usually start thinking about my coldframe this time of year. I don't think I'll even start my seeds until the third week in April this year, looking at the long range forecast.

Yes, but when it does come for y'all up there it doesn't fool around like it does here with high temps barely in the 60's thru May........

Well, I thought we were going to get spring here in NY and VT however..........then we got 10 degree nights back and 30 degree days back this past week along with 4-5 inches of snow!!!!!!!!!!!! Before the snow came we were getting paches of lawn showing and one section of my rhubarb patch had finally creeped out of the crusty snow. It started to send up shoots about 2 inches long and a few tiny leaves were trying to unroll. Then BOOM! The next morning we had snow! So yet another week or more until this white mess will go away enough to work outside. I am going to start seeds tomorrow for tomato and peppers. And I am also going to get about 30 bags of potting soil for my bare root seedlings we have arriving in a few weeks. It is sad that none of the big centers are even ready for us early spring workers yet. I went all over trying to find 2 and 3 cubic foot bags of potting and top soil and peat moss and such for my April arriving plants. And only Lowes was ready with things in place and easy to see what was there and how much it cost. Everywhere else had some stuff but it was still all wrapped up on pallets and you couldn't see what exactly it was and your guess on the cost. So I guess Lowes is getting my money this spring since I need to be ready to go for when the plants show up so they can be potted for sale.

VT must have gotten all of NY's winter, because we haven't had much of one. Tonight we're supposed to have an ice storm, but then it's going to be in the high forties and fifties this week. I hope next weekend I can get the tiller out. The robins are back as of this past Thursday, so it's officially spring here. I am so tired of winter. I want to garden!
