What should be happening with my Brussel Sprouts?

I saw some baby BS plants at Lowe's in Feb, so put them in pots. They are growing, but what is supposed to happen and when? I don't even know what I am supposed to be looking for. Will they produce before the summer? I have googled the topic but it seems I may have grown them at the wrong time since most references refer to different harvest times. Here's apic of one of them

They grow taller and then tiny little bumps start to form along the stem. Those then grow into full sized sprouts. Takes a good long time.

BTW, you didn't actually post a pic ;)

I think that you're right about the timing being off. They can be bitter when harvested in the heat of summer or early fall. These are best planted so that they'll be ready to begin picking at the same time that fall frosts begin to occur.

Most likely cabbage worms or loopers. Bt works wonders on them. Slugs are a possibilty.

a sharp stream of water will dislodge them and often that's enough if you repeat it every couple days until you stop seeing them. Insecticidal soaps are another option, but it must be sprayed directly on the aphids to kill them. It is non toxic to you or pets, but should not be sprayed on any insect you don't want dead or injured. Neem oil is another option and offers a week or two of residual control. It is non toxic to you or pets and generally won't kill anything that doesn't eat the plant material (but the plant material is safe for anything that isn't an insect).

This is my second year trying sprouts, but last year we were drowned out, so I suppose it didn't count. I started Jade Cross from seed and had them hardened off and in the ground by late May here in zone 2. That's five or six(ish) weeks ahead of when you got yours in in zone 5. Our soil isn't the greatest and they had no fertilizer beyond what we applied to the entire garden in the spring and a targeted dose of soluable synthetic a couple of weeks after transplanting. I topped the plants in mid-September. The sprouts are nice, but not huge. If I can get them in even earlier and keep them better weeded, I think they'll get nice and big, closer to typical size.

oopsie, here is the link to the pic (I hope this works!) Does it look like it should for having been planted in Feb? When might something happen as far as blooms or veg production? Thanks for the responses!!

I planted mine in February, in the garden, not in containers. They seem to be quite a bit taller than yours though. I can't really tell from your photo, but mine are a good 2 feet tall now. I didn't know they were actually a fall veggie, so I'll try again then, but we'll both see I guess.
