amending commercial brand soil to improve drainage

since i hadn't heard further from anyone in the discussion about the possible toxicity of cedar (relative to other acids in pine barks), i have decided to err on the side of caution. i'm not sure how happy my plants will be with yet another transplant, but i'd rather have them face a swift shock death than a slow acid nutrient leach (or whatever it is that cedar may or may not do!)

and since i don't have the time to scout out every gardening center for pine bark fines (none of my usual places have them), i am going back to my commercial brand of soil, for at least this year.

however, i would like to improve the drainage capabilities as much as possible. i know about the wick technique, but does anyone have any other suggestions in regards to amendments to the soil itself? does perlite help or hinder? any other ideas?

thanks in advance!
