Wow, that's seems very clever. I bought one of those $10 planters too. Haven't planted it yet but hope to get it done soon. Have the tomato ready to go, though. I'm wondering if the tomato will dry out very fast in this sytem. It will be fun to try anyway. Good for you for thinking of a new, less expensive way to do this.

Update on these planters need to find a better way to hang them after months of heat the tie wraps have worked throw and some are hanging by a thread but i must say all grew super well peppers best here are some pic Dont think ill do the 4 jugs again ill just do the pail upside down pots nexted year they sure gave me tons of bell peppers and japinos and way more cherry tomatoes then i know what to do with for less space great and the upside down shades the plant from our very hot texas sun hehehehe I did water ever other day and very little fert .All my dill died and im starting new batch. to grow tomatoes upside down its better to use 5 gallon buckets. You cut a small hole in the bottom and place a sheet of newspaper or a coffee filter over it. Fill the bucket with a good potting soil, shaking occasionally so the soil will settle. lay another sheet of newspaper or coffee filter on top of the soil. cut another small hole in the bucket lid. Put the lid on and turn the bucket over. cut a small hole in newspaper or coffee filter so you can plant the tomatoe. I plant them when they are pretty small as its easier to get them in. Water daily until it get a nice size then flip the bucket over and hang it up. Preferable to a heavy clothline pole or something strong enough to hold it. You can remove the lid and plant something in the top or you can leave the lid on. Water well until the water starts running out the bottom. No staking is needed and tomatoes never lay on the ground. I am doing this method this year. I'm doing two different buckets, hanging them on the old kind of clothline pole that's like a large T. I put chicken wire loosely up the main pole and am growing cucumbers up the pole. So far everything is doing good. Happy Gardening, Gemfire

Great idea to put more than one plant! I wish I had thought of it, though my bucket was pretty full of roots by the time I moved it. richard30, I had the same problem with circles of wire fencing. They fell over and also it was difficult to harvest the fruits out of them. That's why I did the staight line method this year and wow it has been so much better. The plants actually grew through and up and upon the fence themselves and I didn't even have to tie them on. I put the fencing on the sunny (south) side of the plants and they grew right in.
