container gardening miracle gro moisture potting soil

i would like to know if miracle gro moisturing potting soil would be ok to use when growing tomatoes in pots also i have always fertilized my tomatoes in pots - is there any reason i shouldn't using this potting soil

I would suppose it depends on how hot it gets where you are, how often it rains, and how long your growing season is...
Who knows, maybe that kind of mix would be great if your living in Arizona..
I never use it up here in New England...
Not sure....

In 2009 I made the mistake of putting this MG Garden Soil in some 20 gallon rope containers. They had sweet potatoes, carrots and a few had tomato plants. The sweet potatoes did fine, the carrots were a total loss and the tomatoes did not fare well - stunted growth and very few tomatoes. I finally read the bag and it said in ground use only. The bag also says to double dig the 'soil' into your existing garden soil. No more for me. I should have read the bag. DL

Hi aptosca - It said - for potted plants. How are you to know that doesn't mean house plants? That was one of your questions. The terms potted plants and house plants are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference. All houseplants are potted, but not all potted plants are grown in the house; many people have potted plants outside, on patios and porches, or summering their houseplants outside, or just growing-on plants for size or whatever - many reasons. Plants grown outside in pots tend to dry out faster than plants grown indoors, and that's why some people prefer "water retentive" soils for outdoor potted plants. But one thing is true outdoors or indoors - wet soil that never dries out makes for wet roots, and wet roots make for dead plants. As you can see from reading all of this thread, there's a lot of 'different strokes for different folks.' It's one reason that you find so much conflicting information if you do much research. One thing that's absolutely true, though, is that if roots stay too wet, plants die. But... That's not always true, either, because many plants are incredibly, amazingly adaptable. Species that are known to hate "wet feet" sometimes adapt to living in a constantly wet - I mean soaking wet - pot. I know, I have one. This is another source of much conflicting information. My advice to you would be to try what seems reasonable to you, what seems to fit your own requirements best. If things don't work as well as you would like, try something else. Even if you are satisfied with results, go ahead and try something different, just as an experiment. That's one reason you never get tired of working with plants, once you get into it.

There are probably close to a hundred recipes on line for potting soil mixes acceptable to an organic gardener but I have had good success with my compost for many years, even though there are amny that tell me it will not work and my plants will die although they have produced a bountiful harvest growing in that medium. Hi puppy4, May I ask what price you paid for it at Lowe's? I assume you got the 2 cu. ft. bags? And was it the "potting mix"...or the "garden soil"? The potting mix is more expensive. Like keithaxis, I ended up buying mine at Wally World..same price. Patrick

Sunflower - it DOES hold LOTS of water, so you'll need to be very careful not to over-water until the planting is mature & roots have colonized the entire soil mass. You might want to consider using a wick to help drain the soil until it gets difficult to keep up with watering needs. I'll leave a link below that talks about soils & wicking.

Farmer B - it's considered bad etiquette to ask questions on another person's post/thread. What you're seeing is probably algae and not mold. It usually occurs in containers because you're using organic fertilizers and keeping the soil too wet. Reducing the frequency of watering to those days when you're sure the plant needs it will help, as will switching to a soluble fertilizer like MG or equal.

I already have garlic chives (every few weeks a nice bunch) and nicely growing edible Indian Princess Nasturtiums. I expect strawberries (vine), Yellow Bell Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes & Organic Jalapeno's by the end of May/beginning of June. I have a dwarf lime tree on the way sometime this century (Spring Hill...). San Marzano Organic Tomatoes, Early Girl Hybrid Tomatoes, California Wonder Bell Peppers & Serrano Peppers soon to follow in June and July. Then some Texas Sweet Onions. My late crops will be Mucho Nacho Jalapenos, Cayenne Peppers, Orange Bell Peppers, Dill Weed and then finally early next year some more strawberries (bush). I'm so proud & can't wait.

One thing I've noticed about MG MC is the fertilizer seems to mixed in unevenly. I have 15 peppers growing in it and a couple were growing pale green leaves while a couple more were growing very dark green leaves compared to the rest. No big deal, I just adjusted the amounts of supplemental fertilizer each plant gets over time so they've all pretty much evened out.

medcave: I've also had to do that. It seems to require a "stir" of sorts every now & then if that's all you have in the pot (no manure, compost, bark, etc. with it).
