Using miracle-gro potting soil with organic seeds..still organic?

Well my question is in my title. I use miracle gro potting soil (the non-organic version) and have grown plants from organic heirloom seeds. The only fertilizer I give them is the Jobes organic fertilizer stick and of the course the pre-mixed fertilizer already in the Miracle-Gro.

My question is, is my set up still organic?

The MG potting soil contains non-organic fertilizer, so technically no. Would I lose sleep over that? No.

Definitely not. That doesn't make you an evil person, but, definitely not organic.

Sorry justaguy. I didn't mean to imply that this was in any way a duplicate of Al's mix. But since I have not yet located bark fines I was happy to find a product that is partially made of composted bark fines rather than either a heavy soil mix or a mix that is just peat and pearlite, which seemed to be what the stores did carry. This mix is composed of the bark and sphagnum peat and pasteurized poultry litter and my guess is that the texture might be good for plant growth. But if anyone has suggestions on how I could improve it with materials I can find that would be helpful.

onecrazymom (nice name, BTW ;-), Cucumbers do not require very much root space at all. The thing to understand about most gardeners is they base what they say from 'feel' and maybe an 'authoritative' source or two who base what they say off 'feel'. You can grow a cucumber plant in a tiny root space given ample water and nutrients. The Square Foot Fardening method calls for giving them a 6" wide, 6" deep and 12" long area and to feed them only compost (in a raised bed, not container). It works. Over the years I have learned to ignore people's notions of how large a space a plant's roots supposedly need. Just grow what you want and feed, water it appropriately and ignore root space for the most part. If we container gardener's didn't ignore root space issues we wouldn't be growing in containers!

Hi aptosca - It said - for potted plants. How are you to know that doesn't mean house plants? That was one of your questions. The terms potted plants and house plants are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference. All houseplants are potted, but not all potted plants are grown in the house; many people have potted plants outside, on patios and porches, or summering their houseplants outside, or just growing-on plants for size or whatever - many reasons. Plants grown outside in pots tend to dry out faster than plants grown indoors, and that's why some people prefer "water retentive" soils for outdoor potted plants. But one thing is true outdoors or indoors - wet soil that never dries out makes for wet roots, and wet roots make for dead plants. As you can see from reading all of this thread, there's a lot of 'different strokes for different folks.' It's one reason that you find so much conflicting information if you do much research. One thing that's absolutely true, though, is that if roots stay too wet, plants die. But... That's not always true, either, because many plants are incredibly, amazingly adaptable. Species that are known to hate "wet feet" sometimes adapt to living in a constantly wet - I mean soaking wet - pot. I know, I have one. This is another source of much conflicting information. My advice to you would be to try what seems reasonable to you, what seems to fit your own requirements best. If things don't work as well as you would like, try something else. Even if you are satisfied with results, go ahead and try something different, just as an experiment. That's one reason you never get tired of working with plants, once you get into it.

"Thanks BR. I see it's also got chelated iron in it, looks like a good starter product, when do you start backing off on the phosphate, or do you?" I don't. They stay wicked in that solution until they get moved outside to harden off. I do not use that product at all once the plants are outside and in the ground. Once outside I don't as a rule fertilize veggies once they are outside...sometimes a shot of 8-8-8 granular but my ground is very rich due to the rabbit manure and seldom have a need. But while say peppers are on the green light they will sometimes initiate flower buds while inside.I pick them off but seems a good sign.

Using any source of synthetic fertilizers means that you are not organic in any way. Just asking the question indicates you suspected the answer.

haa haaa...ok I got the point. I did try the organic potting soil from miracle gro- last year and I think it didnt do as well as the original miracle gro...so I switched back.
So if I want to do total organic...I have to make my own soil mixture? or do people buy ready made organic soil? I grow most of my vegetables in containers.

I don't do much container gardening, but I have seen other brands of organic potting mixes. That said, it would most likely be far more economical to make up your own mix.

There are probably close to a hundred recipes on line for potting soil mixes acceptable to an organic gardener but I have had good success with my compost for many years, even though there are amny that tell me it will not work and my plants will die although they have produced a bountiful harvest growing in that medium. When I'm growing seedlings, the mix I use has the same ingredients, but in different ratios depending on the plant's maturity: seed-starting is about 40% coconut coir, 40% perlite and 20% finished compost. When I pot up, it's about 20-20-60%.

Miracle Gro does make a organic planting soil (to mix in around plants in your garden as you plant them) so does Jiffy. I used them to start seedlings this year without adding any soil and had good results. I get them both at Lowe's who also carries organic top soil in 40 lbs bags relatively inexspensive. You might be able to make a mix of yoir own with those
