Anyone familiar with Home Hardware for Pine Bark Fines

Hi it's me again. Just went on the website for Home Hardware because I have a store that will order for me but I can't tell what the pine bark fine equivalent is for what they have listed under soil amendments.
Thanks, if anyone has experience, much appreciated.

The All Treat Canada Red 2cf pine bark garden mulch looks promising to me. It's bark, it's not described as shredded or in nuggets and it contains no dye. Do you have time to order one bag to check before placing a large order? I found the All Treat company online. Maybe you could call them and ask about it.

For the Alltreat Natural pine bark mulch this is the decription. For the Alltreat Red it just says beautiful for landscaping. I will have to call them on Monday because I just can't figure it out. In the meantime, I am going to use ProMix BX as a starting point .

What's your take? I have to call the store to find out what's the minimum order. They also carry a pine bark mulch whose label I can't read and there is no real description as well.

Just FYI, I've called the three OSH stores near me in San Jose (Cottle, West San Carlos, and the new one on Blossom Hill) and none of them have ever heard of "Redwood Soil Conditioner" and it doesn't sound like any of them carry any kind of composted bark - just the 'nuggets' and similar mulches. Has anyone found a source for composted redwood or fir bark fines in the Bay Area? All of the landscape supply places seem to only sell by the cubic yard. I only need like 5 cu ft.

Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time finding pine bark mini nuggets. Perhaps the attached link might help. Many of the local (Michigan) landscape suppliers are also sold out of the small pine bark nuggets, probably because it's late in the growing season up here. The local retailer I get mine from (Meijers) changed suppliers this season and their "mini nuggets" were much larger than they were last season. It took a lot of work to get the right size bark from the new bags this year. I'll have to find them elsewhere next year. Are there any bonsai stores in your area? If so they might be able to help you locate some pine bark fines. Also, if you need only small quantities, I read somewhere that pet stores sometimes sell fir bark (similar to pine bark) for use in reptile cages. I've never looked for that but it might be another option. Most of the larger lansdscape stores/nurseries carry some size of pine bark mini nuggets, sometimes in bulk. Again, the size of the mini nuggets vary quite a bit, depending on source. Ironically the large pine nuggets we use in our gardens for mulch says right on the bag "from the southern pinelands". Does anyone age/compost their own pine bark fines?

Yes you can compost/age your pine bark but I'm not sure about using the big pb nuggets for this. I recall reading similar posts after I bought some bags of fresh but wet pb recently. I asked if they would break down over the winter. The answer was pb stored in a garage would not begin to compost. To make the compost process happen I would store the pb outside all fall/winter so that moisture and microorganisms could start breaking down the bark. With the small pb I'm sure this would work but those big 2 or 3" pieces would take a very long time to break down. I have garden beds full of chunky pb and they remain in big pieces for many years. I wish someone else would chime in. I chose the Canada Red as the best bet because of what it says in the All Treat website:
Canada RedÃÂ® is a completely natural, undyed mulch derived from pine bark. It blends beautifully into any landscape or garden and results in an eye-catching professional job. Apply to a depth of 2"-3" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.

I would steer away from shredded bark. And I have read that cedar is mildly allopathic, meaning that it gives off a chemical that suppresses the growth of other plants.

As for Promix, it is a very good product. But keep in mind that it is 85% peat. It's not a substitute for bark.

I agree with you. I'm having trouble trying to keep all the types straight. Anyways I will call tomorrow and also check out the hemlock from my local garden place. To be continued. Thanks a million. At this stage, I keep petting my seedlings!

So I called All Treat and she said the Canada Red Pine Bark Mulch could vary in size. However, she just sent me a photo from her cell phone and you are right, it looks perfect. Thanks a million.

That's great! Now all you have to do is figure out how to mix it all up. I've been doing a little bit (25-50 gallons at a time) each week. Big job. But oh so exciting when it all comes together. Good luck and keep us all informed about how it goes.
