Well I just love your container. I've been looking for ideas with grasses. Did you buy seeds for the rubrum grass, or was it a plant?
My favorite this year has ornamental oregano (Kent's Beauty), dwarf stock, Lime/green nicotiana, and purple petunia's. The nicotiana, and dwarf stock wasn't blooming when this picture was taken.

Freckles, what is that pink plant trailing your container? I have never seen it before. Will it stay that way all season? It is very interesting!

Sorry it took me so long to answer. My husband had surgery this morning, so I couldn't get on until now.
The pink trailing plant is ornamental oregano. It's a perennial to zone 5 with heavy mulching. I saw the plant in an issue of Garden Gate magazine and fell in love with it. I searched everywhere for it, and finally found it at a nursery in my area. It was in the perennial section, not the herbs. The bracts look like a hops plant, and they can be dried. I'm going to try to insulate the container with bubble wrap this winter, and hope it comes back. Also going to try to collect seeds.
The scientific name is Origanum rotundifolium 'Kent Beauty' if you want to search for it. There is another ornamental one called Origanum xhybridum 'Ray Williams'. The bracts on that one are a little slimmer, although they are a brighter pink.
The plant was only about 6 in. tall when I bought it Mother's day. You can see how much it has grown.

Hope your husband does well with his surgery.

Thanks for giving the name to search for the oregano. Something else to add to my search list when I do my Spring Nursery Pilgrimage next year.

Vera, what a great idea...the nigella is a terrific contrast to the daylily leaves! (and the photo came out very well,too)

I've done elephant ears (the big green variety) with kong coleus and a tropical vine type plant I cannot recall and was *real pleased with this (so were all the neighbors and cars that passed by too we noted :) ..the nice thing was these containers did superbly in very shady positions. I have two large containers that are in almost total shade so I've been experimenting with various combos.

This year we went for a different approach and planted a dark leaved canna, an elephant ear, a lime green potato vine and one perennial - a honochloa (sp?) grass....looks excellent! I love the way the grass provides movement in the breeze along with a casual grace as it spills over, the red showy flowers of the canna (and height) and the exhuberance of the vine and elephant ear. And again, great for shade!!

A big LOL, I had the same "Garden Gate" issue and was on the hunt for the Kent Oregano myself. I have two plants and my mom has one. Beautiful stuff but mine is in the ground because I hope it comes back next year. Beautiful pictures everyone.

Love that combination, esp with the chartreuse of the vine. I have a big pot with that same rubrum grass, lambs ear, and purple striped wandering jew (? name). I recently tucked in 2 hot/pale pink 4" lantanas called 'Athena'.
This red rubrum grass is well worth buying every year and is one of my favorite plants. You can find it in the spring in smaller pots so it's not as expensive as it used to be. It looks beautiful anywhere you plant it in the garden. Looks great with any color near it, esp in the fall.

Evolvulus 'blue daze' and Lantana 'miss huff', by far my favorite combination this year.
I'll definitely be buying lots more 'blue daze' next spring. The Lantana, however, is a perennial in our area, so it will come back from the roots. Both of these plants have required virtually no care, other than a bit of pruning every now and then to keep them within the border area, and from crawling over the other plants in the bed. They have been pest and disease free. I started with just one 'blue daze', but it is such a fast grower that I've been able to divide it twice, and now have 3 plants from the original. One plant quickly grows into a small shrub loaded with true blue flowers. The Lantana can be a thug. When I originally planted it, it was 2 bare canes I'd dug up outta the back yard, where I'd discovered it as a volunteer plant the previous year. It is now approx. 5 feet tall and easily as wide. I think this bed will be reserved for lantana and blue daze next year, and nothing else, so I don't have to worry about keeping them off neighboring plants. The yellow and blue combination is so cheery.

yes lantana can be invasive... one of the worst 100 invasives of all time in other parts of the world, less so in America, thank god. i do love lantana! there not hardy in my zone so im not worried it will spread. I have some deep orange ones with my red-flowered L. berthelotii. I like the L. berthelotii because its trailing fine blue-grey flowers and beaked upright red flowers are very contrasting, and with my orange lantana, my window boxes have never looked better. Its like flames in a cool ocean.

I have Blue Daze in a container on my deck and love it, it's so easy to care for. One of my favorite combos is the lime green potato leaf with lavendar petunias. I am going to have this next year, a friend of mine tried it in her window boxes and the combination is breathtaking, so pretty, it almost looks like the poatoe leaves belong to the petunias and the lavendar color is different, don't see it very much and I can't understand why, it's beautiful!

Linda, I have the lavender petunias, too. My favorite petunia this year, though, was the blue wave because it's such a prolific bloomer. However, the lavender petunia is a standout, I agree. I like the idea of combining it with the green potato vine..sounds lovely. I have mine growing with silver-foliaged plants, and the lavender really 'pops'.
