Tulip marjoletti and Other Species

Hi,

Tulip marjoletti is blooming for the first time for me, and I just love it! They start off a pale yellow and develop a red edge to the petals. I also have 'Little Beauty' coming up in places I don't remember planting like out of my Veronica 'Georgia Blue'. It is a good spot for them,lol. Last year I planted 'Lady Jane' and they looked just as great this year.

I'm obviously really falling in love with these tulips. Do you have any good ones growing that I should consider buying this fall?

Or any type of bulb for that matter that you just love?

They are glorious aren't they? much better than the big Dutch ones.

My absolute favoutite is Tulipa humilis pulchella Albocaerula Occulata - just stunning.

Also check out Tulipa whittalli and Tulipa orphanidea flava.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've been eyeing up the alba caerula one for awhile now. I was afraid it was too good to be true. I had to look up orphanidea flava to see some photos. That one looks like one I could fall in love with too, lol.

Sue, I will be happy to bring you some, Well, I would be thrilled if you would bring me some. They were probably planted somewhere from 40 years ago to 150 years ago YIKES! They have likely multiplied so many times that the bulbs are just way too crowded and small to bloom. You may have hundreds or thousands of small bulbs, too small to bloom. Also, I do get a few blooms up by the house, the squirrels may have moved them, Yes, my guess is that they maybe did a little dividing of them for you...thus a few blooms. I'm off to email you about what else I can bring to the swap for you and your shade beds. I acquired something new and cool from the wild that you might like a start of! Sue

Hi Melinda, I am mainly looking for the Species because they are supposedly more perennial then so many other varieties. I do know there are numerous others that are specially bred to be more perennial than others, but 'most' tulips just don't do much here beyond their first good year of bloom. About Perennial Tulips and More tulips that are 'supposed to be' perennials. Might you have any of those from the link above or below? Here is the full tree, I think the stems are probably 2 years old maybe, but I think it might have been cut back many a few times in the past because it has multiple stems coming out of the ground. So it maybe 5 or more years old. If you compare it to the many other tulip tree sedlings just feet way from this one (all in the same circumstances) then you can see the big difference. All the other seedlings in the same circumstances (all have been cut back as well) have normal seedling leaves. Only this one has the weird narrow leaves. Again, I've never seen leaves like this on any tulip tree seedling in my life. From far back the leaves almost remind me of a Southern Red Oak (Quercus falcata) :-)

I saw a picture of that blue-eyed one and fell in love too. I've been dreaming of it ever since.

It really is that colour too, pure shining white, with the steel blue centre, absolutely gorgeous! It's possibly the most beautiful of all the tulips - not big though, only about 6" high. If I can work out how to post a photo or two I will.

Little Beauty has done well for me too. One year I planted some hybrid tulips and some T. praestans unicum, a beautiful red with wide variegated leaves. Squirrels came and ate all the regular tulips, but they only dug up one T. praestans, and dropped it in the next bed, where it lay all winter and went on to bloom the next spring sitting on top of the ground!

T. batalinii Red Gem has been pretty, but surprisingly I like Bright Gem better because it has multiplied better, so there are several blooms from each bulb.

Has anyone grown T. vvedenskyi Tangerine Beauty? It looks intriguing.

Buy and try them all, I say. I have lots of T. vvedenskyi, both the species type and 'Tangerine Beauty'. I love them both. I can't think of a favorite because I just keep buying and planting everything I don't already have, and love all of them.

Has anyone grown T. hageri? I want a red to plant with Muscari. Does it increase well?
