Good idea. I, myself, have never cared for the look of double daffs anyway.

Might one of the old double daffs look like the one in my post...or like the one pictured in the link which is Butter and Eggs?

Ah ha! Bud blast is what it's called. I was just going to post about this problem with the doubles and then found your post.
A little googling says the cause is "hot and dry" conditions.... apparently that covers the last few springs. I have a couple that haven't ever shown a problem but I also have "Calgary" that every year fails to open. I'll probably toss it if i can't find a spot where it does better.
I planted a few new doubles last year. Usually I steer away from them but after seeing them in a friend's garden I thought I might give them a try again.

WHen I bought my current house, I found several large plantings of a double daff that has many, but small, blooms on each stalk. They are absolutely charming and very reliable.

Blooms are probably less than one inch in diameter and resemble photos of 'White Lion' (though smaller and multiple), but they're perfect in a vase on the kitchen windowsill.

Cheerfulness is a reliable double; that may be what leslies is referring to. It's also small and multiple. I've had mine for years.

I didn't know about the bud blast thing. I planted doubles the last few years; I did notice that none opened this year except for a new all yellow, very full one that came in a bag of mixed doubles (all of which seemed to be the same). Of course the stems of all those flowers bent in half in a windstorm and stayed that way. The buds of White Medal just dried up, so did Mary Copeland.

'Cheerfulness' - that's it! A real cutie.
