Are veggies in containers ever a cost savings?

Container veggie gardeners have to make a bigger investment than in-ground gardeners. Containers, soil, more careful fertilizer regimens, more frequent/careful waterings, can't rely as heavily on compost...

I've heard that in-ground veggie gardening is often not cost-effective compared to the grocery store.

What would you guys say?

I'm thinking lettuce is the most cost effective version especially for baby greens. However I've spent around $20 on just a few containers and soil and seeds. Maybe it is just one of those things that takes up time to recoup initial investment.
