Half 55 gallon barrels, and Al's Mix

I have a question before I do much more thinking. I am sure someone is, has or is planning on doing the same thing.

I was wondering if I could cut 55 gallon plastic barrels in half, long wise, mount them in some frame end to end and have some long beds to grow lettuce or other greens in. I also thought about radishes or beets. I have access to a bunch of safe to use barrels. No chemicals or other stuff. They held a soybean oil product for pig feed.

I was wondering if I filled them with Al's mix or would that work with greens and radishes or even Beets? Another option would be a soilless potting mix.

I could grow these in the ground, but I have so many problems with grass, it would be nice to not hand weed them.

What do you thing? Could it or would it work? Could I direct seed or would I have to put out transplants?

I would be selling anything I produce at an early farmers market.

How much lettuce, radishes or beets could you grow in half a barrel?

Just wondering?

Jay
