I have a book on bulbs here and it says that the most prolific of daffodils needs to be divided every five to six years. Some daffs are slower to increase, in which case you can also just divide them every decade or so. I grow Mount Hood, this is the second year they will bloom and already the flowers on each bulb have tripled and there are bulbils in sight as well. I might have to divide mine every four years... I guess it is best that you keep a journal for your daffs and monitor closely how much they increase each year. If you have trouble seeing how more new growth could come up in the limited space between this year's growth, that would be a sign that it is time to divide. I can't find the bit about when to divide these, but I gather all bulbs are best divided during dormancy, which would mean any time between the moment the leaves fall off and the moment the ground freezes, although I think earlier is better. I think that fall is a bad idea because by then, the plant may have grown more roots that reach deeper, and it will be that much harder to lift them, plus the new root growth would be wasted and it wouldn't have enough time to regenerate properly by next spring. But this is just my admittedly not perfect logic speaking. I would try to do it as soon as the leaves fall off. That way, you do it before new growth starts but after the plant is done producing for the current year. It would then be about to start using its gathered reserves to grow new roots, so your newly transplanted daff would be nicely nestled into place by the time spring comes.

This spring I verified that what I 'thought' was Salome, was in actuality Mrs. R.O. which I love even more than Salome. Salome on left and Mrs R.O on the right...new blooms before they 'pinked up'. Since I found out you sent me Shah Jehan iris, might you also have sent me Sambucina...or a Sambucina look alike? Did I maybe send the Salome (in error) to you or did someone else. Some of you knew that I worked 24 hours on and 24 hours off taking care of an Elderly (OLDER than me) lady in her 90's. She is not doing too well and so they let two of us go. She's not expected to live much longer so it's probably a blessing in disguise. At my age and where we live there really are no jobs. Around here just having ANY job is considered a good job. Unless you are familiar with rural areas you probably can not relate to this. LOL I just have to put my faith in the good Lord that he will provide me with whatever I will need. Notice I didn't say with whatever "I Want". Karyn, you are OH SO VERY RIGHT. It is a perfect time to be off for awhile and work in the yard/fields and so forth. I have a bunch of trees that the wind blew down that need to be pushed up and burned and lots of little odds and end jobs on the place to tidy up. The only bad thing about that is that it will be much harder work, and NO PAY. LOL Well I guess the pay will be having it cleaned up and looking better. Now if these Thunder Storms would move out I could get back to planting my daffodils and so forth. Needless to say, that dumb hole (New Pond) in the front yard is full of water AGAIN. I'd love to be able to get the darn liner in it before NEXT WINTER. LOL We're suppose to have another round of storms at the end of the week. Go Figure. This is exactly what happened last year and it rained EVERYDAY for over 2 months here. I pray we're not in for a repeat of that. Rita, I look forward to seeing all your daffs and daylily blooms this year. I'm sure they will be beauties! I remember how much work you put into your gardens last year. Your daylilies, daffs and lupines. I was trying to clean up my front flower beds the other day when it was such a nice day and I spied some lupine foliage..Yeh! Don't recall what the plant ID tag said though. Maybe it's a bit early to start looking for any signs of foliage for a lot of perennials. See no signs of my coreposis coming back. Have a few daffs that are almost blooming and see signs of more bulbs popping through the ground. They could be either daffs or tulips. My Raspberry wine monarda, larkspurs, shasta daisies, oriental poppies are showing progress. This will be my first year having larkspurs and I hope it is many as has popped up. Surprized that the columbines haven't shown any signs of green leaves yet..maybe it's still a tad early. I did pull a lot of them up in the early Fall as they were reseeding everywhere. I'm anxious for Spring and Summer to come, although it means hard work but hopefully the fruits of our labor will be worth it all for the beauty it provides.
