Al's Gritty Mix Questions (Blood Orange and Reliance Grapes)
Comments (6)Hi, Sounds like you're doing a good job getting your ingredients. Any way you can post a picture of what your mix looks like when it gets in? Just make sure to screen the Turface and gravel over an insect screen (I used a kitchen coulender). Only other thing to watch out for might be the small particles in your orchid bark, 1/16" might be a little too small and cause drainage issues. Sounds like your pot is most likely an appropriate size, a 3 year old tree does well in a 12"-14" container, although as Al will point out you can go larger and over pot as long as you have a good draining mix like the gritty mix. Foliage pro is the way to go, I use 1/4 teaspoon to a gallon of water along with a bottlecap full of distilled white vinegar, and I use it every watering. Other guys MUCH more experienced than myself have had success with this formula. Check out the citrus forum for more advice on your new tree! Comments (17)Hi Wiguy!! First of all Welcome!!! I do grow "a few" : ) Plumeria in the Gritty Mix and i have had great results with this mix. Some of my trees will be pruned around the end of March. If you would like to have a cutting or two, i will be glad to send them to you once it warms up so they will be safe in the mail. It is really to cold to send to your area until April. Here are a few pictures of my trees.. I just want you to know that these trees are very addicting!!! : ) Your cutting will probably be One of my first trees that i brought back fromm Maui and it is labeled a Noid Pink (meaning no identification) most of my trees are named varieties and i will send you one that is named when i send them. I just dont know which i will prune until later. Here are a few Places that i have purchased trees from. Cuttings and rooted trees. Rooted trees are more expensive but sometimes it helps to buy a rooted tree and you can have a jump on the time for the beautiful blooms. Cuttngs can take a year or two to develope blooms. Comments (9)i am going to grow some vegetables, flowers, and herbs this spring in containers. I have grown stuff in containers and had good luck with tomatoes and peppers in miracle gro mix. I had excellent results with a Much Nacho jalapeno plant filled with metro mix. I switched to a large in ground garden for the last 5 years. i start a ton of plants from seed every year under flo. tubes. starting seeds last year was the only time i saw the mix in the bottom of the styrofoam cups very compacted. the roots were all growing right above the compacted mix. they wouldnt touch the compacted crap. This happened, i think, because i started the plants a little earlier than the previous years. I have been wondering how to avoid this and why it happened. i figured it out by reading post in this forum. I have no way of gathering the components to Al's mix where i live. I guess i am stuck with metro mix 300, fafard premium, jungle growth, pro-mix, and all the other brands lowes sells. Out of these brands listed, which is the best to go with for plants that will be in the containers for 3-4 months? thanks....See Morea few questions about Al's mix....
Comments (58)1. Diatomaceous earth is not poisonous, it works like broken glass, the effect is physical rather than biochemical. It is supposed to puncture the skin of small pests (or the intestines, if they eat it). 2. No, there are many types of cat litter, few are suitable as soil amendment. Avoid everything that is clumping, made from organic materials, or crumbles if you squeeze it. The useful ones are very similar to products like Turface and Napa Floor Dry. All I have seen have been pinkish....See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
