Container Gardening

greenhouse solarium gardening

I have leased a solarium for personal use that is 10 feet by 30 feet. It is heated, air condiioned, lighted, and has overhead water drip system. It has a concrete floor. I would like to grow vegtables in it year round. I do not have a clue where to start. Any suggestions? Should I build raised beds, containers? Any comments would be helpful.

Well topcat, you are in the Container Gardening forum so, hope you are reading the postings.
Raised beds sounds like a lot of work to me, can't shift them around easily if you make logistical mistakes , concrete cuts you off from ground & you don't own the site indefinitely.
Grow what you like to eat.
In 300 sq. ft. enclosure choose dwarf varieties & aim for good air circulation among a succession of vegetables.
Make a seedling "nursery" someplace else to optimize your use of the greenhouse space.
Control that electric bill by choosing seasonal crops that match up with outdoor temperatures. You didn't say if can ventilate by opening windows.
Your room height was not mentioned. If the overhead water is drip emitters & not fixed sprayers you have versatility.

Hi, I have more of a question than a comment. I live in Inverness FL and it gets into the 40's here sometimes. How can I keep my garden warm in the winter but not have it cook in the summer? Right now I have PVC hoops set up for shade cloth. If I put plastic over the hoops for the cold weather and just rolled up the sides and put shade cloth on the top in the summer would that work? Also, what would I have to do to actually be able to grow all year long? Thanks, Maria

Hard water Filtration system for greenhouse garden?

Hard water isn't bad for plants except for those needing acidic soil like blueberry. On those rainwater is better. If using hard water it needs to be acidified to pH ~4.5-5 with sulfuric acid or vinegar. Salty water is bad for all plants. But that's about sodium chloride whereas hard water contains calcium bicarbonate. Filtration won't cure either problem. Dissolved salts can't be filtered out by ordinary means. Use an RO system if you think that's necessary but it's not what I'd do.
