Grass invading bulb bed - Help Advise Please

Last fall I transplanted a bunch of Daylilly and Iris rhizomes/bulbs along my front path inbetween some stones. The idea being to have a border of flowers and then later the leaves for groundcover.

The lawn has invaded this planting area. I can see some beginning sprouts coming up through the grass. I was thinking to tear up the grass and apply mulch and woodchips to restore the bed and protect the sprouts. is this a good idea or should I let it be until the bulbs fully sprout (or not)
