Birds eating my seeds out of my pots!

I am attempting to grow lettuce, beans, and wheatgrass. I have my pots outside, nicely tilled, and birds or something is getting into the dirt, tearing everything up, and eating my seeds! I am thinking about making a small scarecrow to put up around there. What other remedies work well for this problem?

Cover them with insect screening or hardware cloth until the plants are established. I've left pine and larch seeds outdoors in pots over winter to stratify and had birds and rodent raiders get into the booty, but solved the issue as I noted.

You might be dealing with mice, chipmunks, or other ferry marauders, too.

OK I will have to do that. It very well could be rats because it seems the soil is tore up and displaced. I've never had this problem in other places I've lived, I guess there are more critters here since I live right next to Presidio forest. Thanks!

Thank you. I didn't realize the leaves would be that much bigger. The stem is light green. Hard to get a picture of stems and leaf attachments ;) After looking around, I think Rhonda is right in that it is a young cottonwood. It just looked so delicate...lol I thought it was some kind of bush. I might just let it grow, we had two trees die this year and this can replace one of them. :) Its funny there isn't any cottonwoods around close by, that look like this young one. thanks again!

This is kind of a pain to do, but the results are really good (if funny-looking). I pull socks or sections of stockings or pantyhose over my tomatoes and figs before they're ripe, and the birds don't seem to see them that way. If you don't have a bumper crop it's manageable, but if you have a farm, well, I guess you'd be fortunate to have a longer attention span than I do! I've never had enough vegetables or fruits growing so that I couldn't keep up with it. Just don't use plastic or anything else that doesn't breathe or you'll burn up or rot whatever it is you're trying to ripen!

I had the same problem with green bean seeds. I strung up some string and hung those disposable pie plates from the string. Just put a hole in the rim of the pie dish and thread a string thru. Then tie to your upper line. Make sure they are off the ground about 6 inches. The pie tins spin and turn with very little breeze and as soon as your plant have the secondary leaves they should be ok. If in doubt - leave the pie tins up. Save them from year to year also or start seeds indoors and put out with secondary leaves. They just want the seed I think. Any questions, feel free to ask. In years past I've used CDs. Seems to work. Never put 'em out this year. Netting also works, but can be a pain to work around. Not so sure that the birds are searching for a water source. April - June we had 1.5 times our normal rainfall. It wasn't until the middle of June that I started noticing bird pecks in tomatoes that barely had any color. Fortunately by then my harvest had peaked. Good luck with the CDs!
