Anemones and Ranunculus Question...Please Help

Hi all,

In late November, I planted over 30 anemones and about 50 ranunculus, but none of them have shown up. Did I plant them wrong?

Someone in this forum told me to soak the anemones in water overnight before planting them, so I did that.

Did I do something wrong? Did I plant the ranunculus wrong? I found out from this forum that I needed to plant them with the "claws" facing up. Was that right?

Should I just plant something else in this area now that the ranunculus and the anemones don't seem to want to wake up, or should I wait longer?

I'm so upset. :-( Any help would be appreciated.

Claws should be down! Go dig a couple up, and see what is going on. You may be able to turn them right side up.The anemones should be planted on their "side".

Also, Ranunculous should only be planted no deeper than 2 inches. You may have planted them too deep.

This is the way we learn. You wouldn't believe all the hard lessons I have learned.

Janie is correct, claws definitely down for ranunculus.

I wonder, have you watered regularly since planting? Has there been a lot of rain, that might rot the anemones. Has it been hot? Both of these really like temps in the 50s-70s.

What kind of anemone? I planted 100 anemone blanda in late Nov. and they have done nothing. Some put on a few leaves but disappeared. I don't know what happened, but the muscari, tulips and daffs in that bed, along with the pansies are all doing well.

The anemone coronara planted in mid to late Dec. are growing slowly but they are growing.

Ranunculus are a cool season plant with a frost sensitive rhizome. In an ideal climate (like Carlsbad, CA) you would plant the rhizome in late fall and it would put out roots and then leaves from December - February and then bloom in March or April. After that it would go completely dormant during the hot dry summer. The problem with trying to grow them in the ground in cold climates is that the rhizome is not cold hardy so you can't plant it in the fall and let it get established in preparation for spring blooming. If you have very cool summers you can probably plant it in early spring and have a summer blooming season but then you will have to dig it up and store it in a frost free location over the winter. If you have hot summers (like me) it doesn't work to plant it in the spring because the plant doesn't have enough time to get established before the weather gets hot and triggers the blooming process. Without being properly established it will put only small weak blooms or none at all. I've tried several times and had only limited success growing it in the ground. I do have a nice one that is about to bloom in a pot and that may be an option for you if you have a cool sunny location for the plant to grow along during the winter. - Steve

Yes, you can - it is all about manipulating (forcing) the tubers into early growth in January so they have made enough vegetative growth to flower before daylength is too long (they are short day plants). It is usual to plant in late summer, autumn (same with seed), allow for some sprouting and leafy growth before an enforced dormancy of a month or so. I have never tried growing these from a late planting but you might find that they can be planted in cool darkness and started into full growth in January - much as you might force hyacinths...although bulbs for forcing have generally had a pre-chilling treatment.

I planted them and they were beautiful, but only a couple made it to the second year and none to the third. I would definately consider them an annual, which I don't really bother with too often. I planted them in the fall ( I believe) and it was a decently cold winter so I am not sure ifthe cold did them in or what. Maybe lifting them after the foliage faded like tulips would help. I'm just not into all that work and most things stay in the ground once they get there, for better or worse. -Ais.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to separate the foliage from the weeds and wild grass. Thinking about it more carefully I do believe, as 'floral' mentioned, it is some kind of ranunculus (not Fair Maids though). I am searching for the tag.

I planted the same bulbs you did about a month later. Almost every ranunculus is about 6 inches tall. The anemone are very spoty, about a third are up so far. It has been constantly rainy and wet since planting. The area gets little sun in the winter. I have not planted these in this location so will wait to see if they need more sun. Al
