did it again -- couldn't resist Black from Tula
Comments (12)Ashok, I too remember Black from Tula as one of the best tomatoes I've ever tasted, but the last time I grew them, the squirrels got most of them. That, and Pink Caspian, had bites in them while green. The next year I grew more cherry tomatoes, so that even if the squirrels did eat some tomatoes, I wouldn't notice and there would be enough for all. Last year, they left my heirlooms alone! So now I'm emboldened to try the irresistible BfT and PC again. Penny, I've wondered who buys all those early seedlings. Does everyone else have a greenhouse? The place where I found mine, OSH, always has tomatoes in February, and they have a free replacement policy, so last year when the first two seedlings died in the cold, I got free replacements (so they are, in a small way, subsidizing my experiments in winter tomato culture). Of course that did mean another visit to OSH (more temptation), but surely if lots of people brought them back, they'd stop selling them so early? Or maybe the plants are so cheap ($1.29) that most people don't bother to bring them back? Still, I'd think selling plants that are bound to die would be bad for repeat business. And OSH does not sell walls-o-water....See MoreI couldn't resist!
Comments (27)denial, To clarify the gardens began here in 2002. They are created and maintained by myself and 14 yr. old son, Nick. They are my release and a place to evaluate the garden worthiness of a plant. You don't need expensive plants to create and have a garden; what you put in is what you get out. Trading is an excellent source of inexpensive plants. It seems now that is in jeopardy. My point about all this is: The suppliers of these inexpensive "box" plants are knowingly flooding the market with bad plants. They get by with it because the plants continue to be purchased. Perhaps you can relate to this: how do you feel about all this bailout money we as taxpayers are forking over because of misrepresented equities and assets. Hosta started to gain popularity in the early nineties. Since then we have 7 known viruses, nematodes, etc. Many of us were blindsided by this and it seems to be a shame on something that used to be so durable, such as "growing in the driveway" Plants continue to be infiltrated in the millions even though they know the problems and cover it up. There are many good sources of inexpensive plants. You are welcome to visit and evaluate the gardens at that time....See MoreCouldn't resist - banquette cushion in!
Comments (46)Mrs. Pete - If you are putting a back on it - make it deeper - ours is borderline on depth. I love our pillows vs a standard cushion on the back. Our pillows our about 22 inches square. Initially, I was going to go with 18 inches but so glad I went bigger - but bigger size means the pillows are deeper. If you have enough height - I would try to have a 4-6 inch cushion for comfort (ours is 3 inches plus padding - so close to 4.5) Also - unless you are a DIY - plan on the upholstery and cushions to be expensive!! I hoped to DIY, but just didn't have the energy to pull it off. Our GC was a genius with the back - If our windows were higher, I would not have needed the fold down - but it is a great feature. I love our nook - I just want to go there and read my Nook! Think about what type of table you will need - Fishies has been struggling with her design. We are going very basic and planning for only 2 people. So our table will be coffee table height but will rise up to 30 inches to use for a desk or breakfast. Power the area - we put power under the benches and in our "caves". I was working on the computer and realized the batteries were low(the bad battery gene runs in the family - LOL), so just plugged in and kept working! Good luck and will be watching your plans....See MoreCouldn't Resist and now we're FALL PLANTING...Local advice needed
Comments (7)It probably would help if you'd tell us what it is that you are specifically planting. Trees? Shrubs? Ground covers? Vines? Perennials? Which ones? Fall is a great time to plant most things as long as they are cold-hardy here. Even some of the annual flowering plants like pansies, flowering kale and flowering cabbage and snapdragons can be planted in many parts of Oklahoma in the fall and will make it through most winters. If you will tell us specifically what y'all are planting now, we can give you the most useful advice. Dawn...See Morejujujojo_gw
