If the central growing point of the new shoot is alive, it will continue from there - if not the plant will resprout from auxillary dormant buds or adventious (spontaneous) buds. We're in Akron and our HIGHS haven't even broken 32 since Thursday. It's 29 right now. It's not gonna be a pretty spring, a LOT of plants will have to re-leaf, but things should look normal by Memorial Day.

I've always read that root formation improves winter hardiness. Can't say I've read a scientific report on it. I alway have bulbs that peak up during warm spells. They stop when it gets cold again. They still flower in the spring. In any case, you have some flexibility so do it when its convenient. I've even planted as late as January. The worst part about planting late is that the squirrels know when the ground has been disturbed and bother the bulbs.

I ended up planting the largest of the bulbs in soil in late summer. The very small ones I ended up planting into a pot. I overwintered the pot and the small ones grew. They didn't bloom though, and I didn't have the expectation that they would. Now I think I will dismantle the pot as the foliage has now died and put the bulbs once again in my basement in a box. I hope to replant them directly into soil later this summer. Perhaps one day they will grow big enough to bloom!

dug from semi frozen soil.. they are DORMANT ... what you see is fall growth ... they are dormant ... your goal is to keep them dormant ... a warm garage.. might trigger growth ... and if they then refreeze.. they might fail ... the sooner the better on replanting ... but a few days shouldnt matter if they stay cold ... you could probably just throw a plastic grocery bag in a snow bank to hold them over ... i dont know how many you have ... dig a 6 inch hole ... a few feet in each direction ... and just shove them all together ... and move them in fall... or better.. when they go dormant in mid summer .... this is not the time of year.. to try for design nor individual placement ... asap would be better .. a few days delay is ok... IF YOU KEEP THEM DORMANT ... i dont know what kind of hyacinths ... large flowers... 4 to 6 inches deep... small types more shallow.. generally 3 times the bulb size ... ken
