What tulip bulbs do during warm spells

I planted a bunch of bulbs but especially tulips in November, in containers on my balcony. I think I might have the implications of containers, balconies, cold etc. under control but I'm wondering what the bulbs do, if anything, during lengthy warm spells such as we've had recently here in the northeast? Do the roots for example continue to grow? How long does it have to be sufficiently warm for the bulb to start flowering?

Are there any books which deal with this sort of detail?

Tx in advance,

Seacat
