self-seeding annuals

I'm thinking of direct-sowing Cleome, Cosmos and Verbena bonariensis both in my perennial border in MA and my mother's in NJ this spring, with the idea of combining the long bloom-time of annuals with the recurrence usually associated with perennials. Do these plants really self-sow more or less reliably? Do they spread widely? Fade out after a few years? Any other plants you could recommend that would achieve this? Thanks! Jeremy
