kitchen Remodel Dilemma: Quartz backsplash and tile on other side

We're renovating our galley kitchen and will have leftover Quartz from the countertops. We plan to continue Quartz on one wall (stove side) but don’t have enough material for the other side without buying another slab. Would it be unwise to use tile for the backsplash on the other side? I have some pictures of the kitchen and backsplash combinations I'm considering. Please share your thoughts. As a side note, the walls will be painted alabaster, and the cabinets will also be white. Our style is a blend of organic modern, natural wood pieces,and neutrals, with a hint of blue from my wife’s KitchenAid, if that helps visualize the overall look.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

Hi Katie, Demo starts tomorrow, so no pics on progress yet, but I'll post when I have some. I'm working a little bit with a KD, and doing the rest myself with cabinetmaker. KD suggested open shelving like in the inspiration pic (but in stainless, specifically). I think it would stress me out though, lol! Having all of my bottles and stuff right out there (the range area is the focal point to basically my whole downstairs living area). My pantry rarely looks fabulous, and I'd be moving the pantry out into the open. So, I think we'll be making the vertical column things on either side of the mantel style range area into pull-out shelves for sheet pans, spices, small bottles, etc. I considered the open shelving with a pretty display of white bowls and dishes, but then I'd lose the storage space for the stuff I really need at my fingertips. Feel free to email me, too, if you want to exchange more ideas. It's a fun process!

No to the 4 inch. We can't see your kitchen, so can't comment, but you may be able to do less backsplash than you think. You really only need it behind areas that get, well, splashed. Those are the cooktop and the sink. So you can really save a lot of money right there. And depending on the look of your kitchen, and how much your food squirts and spurts, you might even want a sheet of stainless behind the cooktop.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I‘ve just gotten a few more photos sent to me. This time from more of a distance. They are duplicates. One with the overhead light in the kitchen tuned on = light above sink, under cabinet and ones without that light on. From what he was telling me, they tend to use that particular light in their kitchen more than the light from the proper light switch. I think that may be enhancing the “flaws” that they see. @joseph_corlett do you advise that they contact the installer to fill the hole, or should/can they do this themselves? I think its been about 16 days from initial install. @Sammie J Just got photos taken a bit further away. @Kelly Zamonski @User They were under the impression that a tile backsplash would further accentuate the uneven wall on that side. Luckily none of us noticed it until they moved the large item they have in that corner. The choice of GC is a bit iffy. Thats what I told them. Do you recommend simply leaving it alone at this point or finding another GC? It may just cause more time, money, and stress. I’m of the school of thought that it is what it is at this point. No further aggravation is needed for them Especially because of the potential cost. Like I said, most of these photos have the under cabinet light on and then off to show the contrast. They mainly use the under cabinet light which highlights the issues they see - well, we all saw. We all know nothing about remodels/updates or what to expect from them.

I would use a tile backsplash throughout--you can't put quartz as a backsplash behind a stove anyway, and using a partial quartz backsplash with tile in other areas sounds like it would be tricky to pull off well. Also consider the thickness of quartz if you'd be using leftover pieces from a counter slab--may not be the best fit for a backsplash.

I would want same backsplash for the aesthetic of the galley. It would be different if it was a stand alone alcove of sorts to pull off a different look, but it's not what you have. Backsplash isn't selected until after cabinets/counter has been installed anyway.

I wish I could see your kitchen... The counters are bit busy right now and it is hard for me to visualize the beauty under it all. What is on the other side? Is it an island? Or another wall?

When I look at what you have my personal feeling is to go as simple, clean, fresh and plain as possible. Tiles matching your cabinet in color and tone. Tile along that galley wall under the cabinets to the sink.

I would not use the slab as backsplash, I know, it seems like you paid so much for the slab of quartz and it feels like a terrible waste. It is not. Waste is part of the entire process. Like wallpaper or drawer lining paper or material for a slacks, There is always left over that can't really be used. If you must use the left over piece, maybe a garage counter or laundry room counter or donate it to Habitat for Humanity. Accept this loss and focus on finding the right tile for you soon to be beautiful galley kitchen.

If you have not picked and bought the slabs.. I would consider using a slab backsplash with another material. I did it and love it in my own kitchen.

On another note.. are you putting in new cabinets? The ones you have look new but it is hard to tell with the photo.

I would also recommend using a tile backsplash in the entire kitchen, in the interest of cohesion.

I had a similar situation with marble tile when I renovated my master bathroom. Lots of extra 12x12 tiles. We saved it and then used it for the floor of a new powder room. You could save the quartz and use it in a bathroom/laundry room/basement worktop, etc. You never know when it will become useful.

Don't mix it...tile all! It will look hodge-podged! Especially if it's a galley kitchen.

Use the leftover materials in bathrooms, laundry, basement or wherever? Just don't be surprised how $ it is to fabricate.
