Top half of tree dead, bottom half alive
Comments (10)Some kind of white birch, which are beautiful trees but they have lots of problems. Even in the best conditions they're short-lived compared to many other species. Where are you located? That looks like a pretty warm, dry environment for white birch, which like cool, moist soil. White birches are almost always killed off by the bronze birch borer (insects) after a few years, too. I think the top is completely dead and it will spread down through thre whole tree in a season or two. I recommend that you just remove the whole thing now and replace it with something better suited to your area. Comments (2)I have plant in the field in South Carolina, that do that, do not know why, but they are Rabbiteye & are loaded every year. Mine are fuller & rounder the yours, but mine are 10 years old too. I got my my bare root plant from an 38 year old orchard & some of his plants did not have leaves on the old wood. I do not see a problem with your plants, but this is the first year I have potted blue berry plant. I only have 20 in pots, most are in the field....See MoreHalf of my fiddle leaf is growing well and half looks like it's dying!
Comments (4)The cause is related to the plant's inability to move water to its most distal parts due to compromised root health/function. The most common cause of root issues is over-watering. Start monitoring soil moisture levels using a 1/4 or 5/16" wooden dowel rot (any hardware or big box store). Cut it in half (yields 2 - 24" pieces) and sharpen ends in a pencil sharpener. Stick deep into the soil, as in all the way to the bottom of the pot. If it comes out wet and stained dark from the soil, withhold water until it comes out almost completely dry. When you DO water, water to beyond the point of saturation - so the soil is completely saturated and at least 15-20% of the water you applied exits the drain hole. This is important because it flushes accumulating salts from the soil, salts that inhibit the plants ability to take up water and nutrients and skew the ratio of nutrients in the soil. If you can't water this way for fear your soil will remain soggy so long root health and function are negatively affected, you should address the problem or be prepared to do battle with your soil interminably for control over your plants' vitality (health). Of all factors you have complete control over, soil choice is most important. Getting it right is the largest single step forward you're likely to make as a container gardener. Comments (12)Sorry to hear about your experience. Mine is/was similar. I found several layers of wallpaper, with a skim coat in between, and then under that, it seems to have been applied directly to drywall. I have removed a lot of wallpaper in the past, but I ended up damaging the drywall in one room so badly, we decided to hire someone. I had several contractors come through who looked at the amount of wallpaper and wouldn't do it! One guy was willing and he starts this morning so I will see what magic he uses. If he has any tips, I will share....See MoreJAN MOYER
