Is Maman Cochet Cl Really THAT lovely?
Comments (15)There are several very old bushes of Maman Cochet in our neighborhood, surviving in the unkempt yards of old houses. I dug one out of a hedge (only the tip of one cane showing) at the house of some friends of mine, and convinced them to cut back/dig up that end of the hedge. After about 2 years, MC had grown 3 feet wide and 7 feet high, and was covered in gorgeous blooms. My friends were astonished, but I was not - the old roses which have survived decades of no care (and even survived being eaten by hedges!) are VERY hardy (as in tough, not as in temperature). I have a Niles Cochet (another color sport of Maman Cochet) which I got in the neglected (but full of old roses) back yard of a small cottage in our neighborhood. The elderly man who lived there and owned it knocked on our front door with his daughter one day about 20 years ago, and asked for "Lor". That was my FIL's name, and we now live in the house he grew up in. At that point he had been dead for several years. I invited the man in, and he told me that he had moved back into his childhood home (the cottage down the block from our house), and that he had been a childhood friend of my FIL, about 80 years before he knocked on our door! Anyway, he invited me to come look at the roses, and take cuttings of anything I wanted. Here is a bloom of 'Niles Cochet' I got from the bush I have that I rooted from a cutting from a very old bush growing behind that cottage. The Cochet family of roses obviously likes our neighborhood....See Morereally, really, really dry skin
Comments (31)Over the last few years, I have developed extremely dry skin as well. Mostly on my feet. And not like most people, who get callouses mainly on their heels. I actually get very dry skin along the outside edge of my sole. It just cracks open and bleeds. No lotion helped, and believe me, I tried MANY lotions. The only thing that gave me some relief was to wear Band-Aids over the cracked portion and to always wear socks. Of course, many times when I removed the bandage I would also remove some skin, causing more bleeding. And then I turned to the article in the Reader's Digest that changed my life. No kidding. You know they always have those articles - 13 Things Your Waiter Won't Tell You, 13 Things Your Mechanic Won't Tell You, etc. A few months ago the article was 13 Things Your Podiatrist Won't Tell You. I read it with interest and the recommendation for dry and cracked feet was to use AMLACTIN. The doctor who recommended it said it was "pretty much magic in a tube". There is a body lotion and one specifically for feet (a little thicker). The only caution is that if you use it you should limit your exposure to sunlight. I felt that if my feet never saw the light of day again but stopped cracking and bleeding, I would be happy. It promised to also exfoliate. And guess what? After using it just twice a day for less than a week, my feet were 100% better. No cracks or bleeding. I continued to use it for about a month and the skin on the bottom of my feet became soft and supple. I know I sound just like a commercial, but I truly felt that I had found my miracle. I now use it just a couple of times a week and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is expensive IMO (about $12 for the foot cream), but SO worth the cost....See MoreMy lawn really is in bad shape, I would love any help and suggestions!
Comments (8)HalloBlondie, thx for your ideas. The part of the lawn that is inundated with the coarse grass-like clumps is all we have in front of our townhouse. Probably 30' by 30', roughly. We did plant a gingko where the elm was but it will take many years to supply the same shade as the elm... We'll give your idea some thought; we'd be renegades, tho, vis a vis the adjoining neighbor's front yards (kids sometimes like to play all the way lengthwise across the the long span of lawns that extend across the front yards of the 5 townhouses...) If we really redo the whole space by adding shrubs, etc, it would kind of preclude that type of neighborhood play. I am wondering if yourself or anyone can ID the main clumps of stuff in my first pic and LMK how what can be done about it........See MoreScentuous Rose in Bloom
Comments (50)Lol Diane! That is like the rose version of Sophie’s Choice…you really want the rose, but do you want it ’Grace Rose Farm’ bad? Edited to Add:: Scentuous is probably one of those non-exclusives grown by Otto & Sons, so probably a nice plant....See MoreDiane Brakefield
