Has anyone DIY-ed a frameless glass shower enclosure install?
Comments (2)I did ours through Wilson Glass. They shipped me a kit of parts/hardware and suction cups. They placed the glass order with a local tempering plant. I picked up the glass and installed. Shipped the suction cups back to Wilson when I was finished. That was 3.5 years ago. The main things to keep in mind are that 1) you have to do the measurements, so any error is on you and 2) the glass is heavy. We did 1/2" glass, and our fixed panel (admittedly big) is about 120lb, IIRC. The 30" wide door is more like 70lb. Getting the door and panel in place took 3 people and 3-4 hours. Mostly 2 to move/position/hold and 1 to mark/drill/install hardware. Measuring for the door and panel was a challenge, and having a helper for that makes sense if it's more than just a door. Our fixed panel is 42" or so wide and has a cutout for a bench. It's held in place by 4 small clips/channels and gravity. Locating them (2 on the wall, 2 on the bottom, with the cutout in between) was also a painstaking process. If that doesn't dissuade you, go for it. I saved somewhere around $700 to $1k by DIYing it....See MoreFrameless Glass Shower Doors--Channel or Clips?
Comments (1)I have silicone and clips. The silicone is pretty much invisible. I guess the installers were careful. If you want to go frameless, why would you want a metal channel when you could have clear silicone? Find another installer....See Moreframeless shower glass install
Comments (10)$$$ detail and NOT retrofittable. This needs to be a new project, planned properly from the beginning. The average 7-10K shower price just jumped a good 3-5 grand for all of the meetings and fussiness in coordinating everyone. If you want more of a luxury space than an average tiled shower, like with slab stone walls, curbless entry, and other Houzz like details, your budget will need to expand exponentially. I've been involved with many bathroom remodels that easily cost more than the 83K price of my first house, adjusted for inflation. There isn't much limit on upper end costs....See MoreClosure gap when frameless glass shower enclosure slider is "closed."
Comments (2)I was also going to suggest that the doors are not installed level. On the older style of slider or bypass doors you were able to adjust the roller bracket to bring to doors into level. I'm not sure what adjustments are available on the newer type of slider, which I assume is a set of rollers which roll on a bar. I would start by checking the level of the bar....See MoreSmalls
