Has anyone DIY-ed a frameless glass shower enclosure install?
Comments (2)I did ours through Wilson Glass. They shipped me a kit of parts/hardware and suction cups. They placed the glass order with a local tempering plant. I picked up the glass and installed. Shipped the suction cups back to Wilson when I was finished. That was 3.5 years ago. The main things to keep in mind are that 1) you have to do the measurements, so any error is on you and 2) the glass is heavy. We did 1/2" glass, and our fixed panel (admittedly big) is about 120lb, IIRC. The 30" wide door is more like 70lb. Getting the door and panel in place took 3 people and 3-4 hours. Mostly 2 to move/position/hold and 1 to mark/drill/install hardware. Measuring for the door and panel was a challenge, and having a helper for that makes sense if it's more than just a door. Our fixed panel is 42" or so wide and has a cutout for a bench. It's held in place by 4 small clips/channels and gravity. Locating them (2 on the wall, 2 on the bottom, with the cutout in between) was also a painstaking process. If that doesn't dissuade you, go for it. I saved somewhere around $700 to $1k by DIYing it....See MoreHow wide a space between frameless glass shower door and glass
Comments (6)Good for you, you did not accept that and they are getting redone. If done correctly...you should (or can) get away with NO vertical plastic stops. I try to avoid anything that collects gunk and requires maintenance. I measure and order all my doors and the gap should be 1/8"-1/4". Anything over 1/4" is too much for my satisfaction. 1/2" is totally pathetic. When this gap is done correctly, you will find you do not need a plastic stop to prevent water from leaking out. If you use a sweep on the bottom, that will keep the door in place where it needs to be because it puts some drag onto the threshold. Measuring takes time, a lot of time if done correctly....See MoreClear shims under frameless shower panels?
Comments (13)When did the fellow measure this job? The measuring should take place after the tile is installed. Most times you see plus or minus maybe 3/16". Depends on size and thickness of glass. Clear shims take the weight until the silicone sets up. Removing them will not make any change in appearance than slicing them. With 3/4" gaps I would be telling the boys to take it back and try try again. Who's glass guy? Yours or the builder? I've used the same guy for 14 years. I have sent back one piece in all that time. I have one client who dislike my guy and other than that a perfect record. These glazers should be using levels and plumb lines to do the job right. To be perfect the fix panes should go in first and then doors measured....See MoreBest way to install a frameless glass shower door on a non-plumb wall?
Comments (6)Thanks--our challenge is that the plumb wall (which is new) is only a 42" high pony wall. But we could possibly have one hinge in that wall and the other on the glass panel that will be installed on top of the wall. The last crazy plan I came up with is to go with a custom shower curtain rod instead. (This shower was originally supposed to have a full wall to create an alcove with a shower curtain, but due to a lot of shifts as we went through the project to accommodate old house quirks, we switched to a pony wall with a glass enclosure to allow light into the shower enclosure.) If we attach it to a fixed panel on the non-plumb side, it would definitely be a short one. The shower is 42" long and the door was to be 27" so there is room to do that. (Leaving aside the part where we prefer the door hang from the wall than from a fixed panel, it has some benefits--there could be a towel hook behind the door, for instance.)...See Moredragonflyr
