Anything you don't plant because of bugs?
Comments (34)I expect I am going to have some problems this year with bugs and birds and IâÂÂm still resisting growing under cover. By next year, I may be thinking of it again. I donâÂÂt know how you all do it with the covers. IâÂÂve been reading about using tule or other fabric, but I have seen a couple of photos of very well covered rows, clipped onto plastic hoops and weighed down with bricks and it just seems like a lot of trouble. Then I imagine you might have to pollinate every single plant under cover by hand? IâÂÂve also read that sometimes the bugs still manage to get under the covers, aphids and others get under there somehow. Why is that? Is it when you have to get under there to pollinate? And does using row covers cut down on sunlight? I don't get a full day of sun as it is, so I wouldn't want to add to that problem. Bird netting is always suggested for strawberries, but you need a framework to put it on and that also has to be weighed down properly, IâÂÂd think? But maybe as with many things, it's just a trade off and it's one kind of effort against the effort of dealing with bugs and ending up successful with the covers vs losing crops without them? Those of you who have problems with aphids, donâÂÂt the aphids attract lady bugs that take care of that problem?...See MoreAnd you don't have Julia Child yet because.....???????
Comments (24)I bought 3 this spring at a local nursery. I really wasn't intending to buy them, but the blooms and the fragrance won me over. The ones I bought are very fragrant. When healthy, they are prolific bloomers (as floribunda are) and the color varies from a pale to a butter yellow. I don't usually prefer yellow roses, but I was struck by these. I have had trouble with them since buying them due to bugs eating them (though not the aphids that I have trouble with in my backyard garden) and plagued with blackspot. I prefer not to spray, but am finding it difficult because of how badly they've been affected. I'm not sure what went wrong because I have a Don Juan climber very near them which has been unaffected by any of it. All my roses are so different! Does anyone have any suggestions to improve their condition? They are in a prized location, and I hate to have them looking the worst in the garden... JC is so beautiful when healthy. I would love some organic options....See MoreDon't pitch rootless divisions in the trash because...
Comments (6)This one wasn't exactly rootless, but it was leafless, and the root mass had been chewed to pieces by my Dolly dachshund (devil dog Alabama style). I saw a bit of green dots around a piece of the crown, which was itself totally dismembered, and a few root pieces. So I put it in the pot the day it arrived.....and kept it shaded and hoped for the best. It was beautiful when it came from Bob Solberg. Somehow it fell off the table and Dolly got it. Comments (6)Something likely isn't right with your install. Take some pictures of your install, open the cover panels, take pictures of that, take pictures of the piping going to and from. Call the boiler manufacturer and talk to technical support. Describe the noise and send the pictures. It doesn't sound right that it would be so noisy. There may be something wrong with how it was installed or set up. If the manufacturer says the noise is normal then consider sound proofing or change out. Also go through the installation manual and to the best of your ability check the way it is connected. If you are truly lost you can perhaps have your city's building inspector come and look at it. Have the manual handy as they can look through that to see if it is installed correctly. I know how you feel because we recently had an indirect water tank replaced and I was so discouraged that it couldn't provide hot water for a 10 min. shower and then some times was providing 150 F water. I thought I got really bad equipment. Turns out they did not install a check valve to prevent back flow into the water tank from the boiler loop so it was over heating. Not sure why it couldn't provide the hot water but I had them back and had them install to the manual as well as give me a new aquastat and all works Ok now....See Moreleslie1228
