They say record breaking for the central valley...just real hot in the bay are. Nice,after a weak and tepid August and September here in the bay area.

you must be inland? it was supposed to be "hot" today, but along the peninsula it is just pleasant. --microclimates-- :)

IMO, there are a lot of improvements you can make. The bean selections are decent, you will like Emerite and Fortex. Rattlesnake is a heat tolerant workhorse. Ky blue and Asparagus are IMO, overkill. Silver Queen corn is still preferred by millions, but you might consider Silver King which is an se variety with most of the good traits of SQ. I would grow Breeders Choice or Early Choice instead of Early Sunglow. While some people love the extra sweetness of the sh2 varieties, you might consider a synergistic variety instead. They combine the sweetness of an sh2 with other traits that improve flavor and texture. Peppers get personal. Orange Bell is the best flavored bell pepper I've grown. If you like a sweet Italian type, look at Stocky Red Roaster from wildgardenseed.com For hot peppers, choose them by use instead of by quantity. Here are a few mixed varieties worth looking at: Poblano, Italian Frying, Chapeau de Frade (wonderful flavor!), and Trinidad Seasoning. The pepperoncini's are good peppers so include them. I won't mess with the squash, there are lots of good varieties, but you might as well grow what you have listed and see if you like them. Tomatoes like Supersweet 100, Better Boy, and Early Girl are somewhat limited. Better Boy is decent, but you could easily get seed of Ramapo and Big Beef which will outperform in your climate and have excellent flavor. Fourth of July is an early variety, don't grow more than 1 or 2 plants. I would suggest Bear Creek, Kellogg's Breakfast, Black From Tula, and Eva Purple Ball to expand your flavor potential. DarJones

This is a good thread. We have more annual rainfall than you Californians, about 40", but have long summer droughts and very heavy soil, somewhat compensated by the garden's being on a slope. We get snow most winters--last winter was a wet one, with five feet of snow that melted however promptly--but temperatures rarely fall below 20F, tending to stay in the thirties and forties much of the time during winter. I grow my plants as others have described here: roses and shrubs underplanted with subshrubs, perennials, bulbs, and self-seeding annuals. We don't water plants after the first year. Last year we went four months with one centimeter of rain: most things survived. We keep a heavy mulch on our beds. My plant list: Bearded iris, which I DO like; this is unkillable if you don't overwater it. Also I. orientalis, more commonly known as I. ochroleuca. Snakeshead iris, an iris relative, is good. Lavender, mostly lavandins (L. angustifolia x L. latifolia) and L. angustifolia and close relatives: these are hardy and don't mind heavy soil. L. stoechas may need looser soil; my finely cut tender lavender died to the ground last winter but is coming back. L. lanata is supposed to be tender, but I've never seen cold damage on mine: it has brilliant silvery foliage and violet flowers, and does well in hot, dry places. Artemisias of every kind, perovskia. I hear some of these can be invasive; in my garden I think they employ all their energies just staying alive. Caryopteris is good and handsome; sometimes it seeds. Thymes don't hold up well, but I think they might do better at the feet of roses with some protection from sun and wind. Mother-of-thyme (Thymus serpyllum) does very well this way as a ground cover, as does the caraway-scented thyme, the botanical name of which escapes me. Common culinary sage does well for me and is a handsome plant that the bees love; if it's particularly happy it will self-seed. The form with purple leaves dies out, but the yellow-variegated kind does great without summer water: mine stays prostrate. I'm beginning to discover the ornamental sages. I was recently given S. microphylla and S. 'Indigo Spires'; the giver tells my they both do well in a dry garden, but I'm watering mine as they're in their first year. S. guaranitica is a magnificent plant, but it gets big (think two meters tall and wide, though somewhat open in growth) and needs a little shelter from sun and wind, but it's not fussy. Rosemary in its many forms. It can be killed by a very wet winter, but I just plant a new plant: like most of these aromatic plants it's very easy to grow from cuttings. It stretches out and roots as it goes. Dahlias and kniphofias (red hot poker) are surprisingly modest in their water needs, at least if they're in heavy soil. Spring-blooming bulbs do their growing in winter and early spring when there's water, then go dormant in summer during the dry period. Daffodils, tulips, crocus all thrive here. Many of them need winter chill, and critters like them, except for daffodils, which have the enormous virtue of being poisonous. Common daylily (Hemerocallis fulva) grows everywhere. In California I'd be checking out the native bulbs. More aromatics: every kind of Nepeta; lavender cotton (Santolina) in all its varieties; Phlomis, to which a friend recently introduced me; this year I'm trying hyssop in the open garden. Field poppies, the annual red poppy that you see in Impressionist paintings; that stately weed mullein (it does take up a lot of space its second year). Then there are the drought-tolerant shrubs, but that's another discussion. Gardening is always an experiment. Our garden is influenced by our deep and heavy soil and by our usually generous annual rainfall. Since we don't water in summer we usually can grow plants like rosemary in heavy ground, but if we do get a lot of rain in late spring or summer, rosemary can die. A dry garden in summer means that we usually don't have to worry about our tall bearded iris rotting or losing our daffodils. We have enough winter chill for temperate climate plants. Make sure to select a variety of cistus that does stay small and compact :-)) Some get to be pretty hefty shrubs - 5-6' tall and as wide. I am personally very fond of the intergeneric hybrid xHalimiocistus wintonensis 'Merrist Wood Cream'. As drought tolerant as both its parents (Cistus and Halimium), it stays small, has a longer bloom season than a regular rockrose, and has a great pale yellow flower with a burgundy center.

Gypsey Bells Leaf Drop in Hot Weather Southern California --- Help!

I have four new Gypsey Bell plants which were thriving with full foliage and fruit planted along side pimiento plants in pampered garden boxes! During the heat wave and rise in temps in mid June here in Southern California, I started noticing my gypsey bells looking a bit droopy. These plants are watered 10 minutes daily on 1/2 GPH drippers in PM. On the extreme hottest of days I would give them an extra 10 minutes of water during day. Then a week later I began to see a significant leaf drop which seems to be continuing now, also with yellowing leaves at the bottom. My pimiento plants seem fine at 1/2 GPH, not affected at all. Im guessing the gypsey bells may need more water so I put them on 1 GPH drippers for now. But now I'm reading this may be an over-watering issue so I'm coming to the experts here for help. What shall I do? My plants were thriving. All my other bell plants are doing fine. No evidence of pests. I have excellent soil. The heat seems to be the precipitating event. Its been a strong difference in nor and sou cal summer's. I mean the bay area hasn't had a upper 80f day since June,and I just heard the "extreme" heat warning for inland norcal was cancelled. Here,in the bay area..just another summer day as I write..not hot.
A summer with no heatwaves in the SF bay area. Microclimates is right!

We have had a couple of weeks of spring like weather, highs in the 70s. Now we will have about a week in the mid 80s. Pretty normal for our area in the hills west of Calistoga. Al

The garden was just starting to come back to life after the August and September heat waves, but I think it will be set back again by this one. Pity- I was hoping for a fall flush of roses.

ok, I'll update my post. Now that it is Monday, it is bloody hot. and no a/c. my roses are still blooming like crazy. hopefully a mild,fast winter?? :)

My vote is for a mild, long winter. Not too frosty (or at all), not too much rain just a nice weekly shower (on the day most convenient for me, LOL), daily highs around the mid-50s. :)

The sun is still intense, but there's finally a hint of chill in the breeze that has mad all the difference for me when outdoors and exercising. Heat still fried the cabbage and bok choi seedlings that even bothered to even sprout this week, gambled wrong there. Can't hate on these Oct ocean temps though, if I'm not at the beach I'm staring longingly at surfcams on some e-device.

No one of my finest years gardening, powdery mildew and heat sapped my interest by the end of July. Hoping I can get back in the groove when Fall really kicks in.

I am wilting myself - it's SO HOT today! It was 102 here on the SF peninsula (in some areas near the foothills). It was like walking into a furnace to go out the door. We don't have A/C but the tiled roof and concrete slab foundation keep it tolerable inside if we close the windows and drapes. My workplace is heavily A/C's so it's a shock to walk out that door into the blasting heat.

Came home to find black eyed susans completely wilted and dead flowers :(

Also my purple coneflowers are dying but they have been doing badly for a month now - one turned black on half the plant and the blooms just turned stiff and desiccated. The other one keeps wilting even when I don't think it needs water, it's also looking pretty sad. I have avoided the temptation to over water and all the other plants (mostly sages, lavenders, and Sun Parasols) are thriving.

Well, the weather dude here said we may actually get some light rain this coming Tuesday, 6 days from now...oh, I've been fooled and lied to before...don't think I'll hold my breath......lol.

I'm probably Sunset Zone 20 (? high hills in La Crescenta) - almost total crop failure this summer: several tomato plants died without bearing fruit, other tomatoes small yield, tomatillos gave up, peppers, eggplants, green beans, even zucc and other squash barely produced. I mulched with straw for the first time - apparently that didn't help, maybe was a bad idea? Anybody else have this kind of disaster this year?

It was a two and a half day heatwave...for the bay area. Would have been nice to have had a few more this summer.

Forecast for our area includes a high of 59 and chance of rain this Thursday, then high of 97 the following Monday and Tuesday. Seriously?!? It's typical for October though -- dip a little, then back up but not quite as high... dip some more, back up a little more.

Our dude says rain late Wed into Thurs and a possible half inch out of it.....I'll stand up and cheer when I see it. I heard it would warm up again, but I must have missed the part about 97 degrees, definitely hope that doesn't happen here. I think I've had all I can take without going postal.....

LOL wcgypsy, the part about 'going postal' made me laugh because everyone is soooo irritated during hot temps, especially with humidity. As soon as the weather cools off, that mood changes like the flip of a switch, LOL.

I saw 97 on a weather site, Wunderground.com, putting in my zip or city name. That forecast is down to 95 now, so I'm hoping that trend will continue and drop even further by next week.

I've found wunderground to usually be pretty accurate for my area. Now comes our beautiful time of year, the reason we all live here and we find ourselves asking if we really want to move....lol..Yep, flip of a switch.....

Wow,I think of Hayward as one of the warmer microclimates in the bay area..and I would guess the Mid May-now (October 12) ave was about 73..down from the not so bad 76-77. And when we have a blessed warm summer..80f seems to rule. Not the last few years.
Urban or climate change seems to be moderating our temps..more flatline,less peaks and valleys.
