Traded bulbs and future seeds for trade

Dear Kitty and Larissa,

How are the "new" arrivals?? Kitty, does Evergreen look like it froze or is it ok? Larissa, how is Vera doing in her new home??

All the babies from Kitty are doing great. Pink Star is still sleeping and there are no scapes, but leaves on the mini/baby bulbs from Larissa.

I will be posting a list of seeds available soon. What is the best way to send them? Many of the seeds that Cindy sent look like they'd been squashed between rollers. Would bubble wrap and "HAND CANCEL" take care of that??

Can't wait to send out seeds. Looks like I'll have lots of interesting crosses (guess we'll see how interesting they are based on responses!).

I always ship seeds, and bulbs or plants, in the USPS Priority Mail boxes, free at the Post Office. The smaller video sized box is nice and sturdy, and relatively cheap to ship. Delivery Confirmation is free if you print shipping labels from online.

I've gotten seeds in the mail that were crushed by the postal system's rollers, too... writing "hand cancel" on the envelope doesn't always help.

Another method is to go to the dollar store and buy a few of their small bubble mailers... those offer some protection.

I never ship anything in a regular envelope... the postal system doesn't pay enough attention, and most envelopes are run through heavy machinery to sort them by zip code and such. This includes those heavy rollers that squish everything flat.

Rigid cardboard boxes or bubble mailers are where it's at!

Hi Kristi,
Evergreen looks great. The first bud didn't make it, but there is healthy green showing, PLUS it is getting another scape. Yeah!!! I'm so excited.

I just checked my babies. I repotted them in their own 2-inch peat pots in one of those seed trays with the plastic covers. They're downstairs under lights. To my surprise they're about 4 inches or so high and getting their third leaves (I swear they grew those today!).

Some of the new bulbs were in the greenhouse, and were growing scapes. Others were down under the lights and I found those had great roots. I'm opting for roots first, so am taking all my newly acquired bulbs down where it's warmer. All the older bulbs are sleeping quietly in the greenhouse back under the little deck. It's mostly in the 50's there.

The seeds I sent out were layered in that Saran sticky wrap stuff. I just lay a piece down, place the seed, then fold up the bottom to cover them. I could write their parents' names on the plastic and it kept them separated. It may have been a bit tedious to remove the seed, but from reports they seemed to have grown fine. I never thought I'd be so in love with growing these babies!

BTW, we got lots of snow today, so I played with my hippis :-)

Hi there, you sent me the surprise box in late spring, with the brug cuttings, and I had sent you bulbs before. I have a nice box of bulbs again, (otherwise I shall toss out). I will have agapanthus this fall. It is a dark blue. I got it on sale last fall, and it bloomed a lot, but was splitting the pot, so I seperated it. Both are ready to bloom now, so in fall, will have one pot to share. I read the seeds do not make plants. It had no name on it, most likely that is why it was on sale. Your brugs you sent are doing super, all leaved out, and over 2 ft. tall. Also the basket plant you sent is putting out runners, or whatever. What a nice surprise you sent. Darlene

I already did. There's no response on here anymore. No active seed savers and traders. I have Rose De Berne, Black Pineapple, and Cosmonaut Volkov seeds, and there's no interest at all. Before Gardenweb was piggybacked onto Houzz, the trading forums were extremely active, with new and exciting posts every day. Now, it just seems to be collectors looking for specific things, and only will trade for specific things. Back in the day of active traders, my garden diversity compounded by 10 or more varieties because 10 plus people wanted to trade. I only got 3 responses, so far. I save seeds, and so have thousands of seeds, and no one wants them. Maybe that's what happened to the other traders, they just stopped saving seeds because they couldn't find anyone to trade with. I find it very strange, that with all the school gardens, community gardens, food forest projects, urban gardens, etc, that no one seems to save and trade seeds to increase their garden diversity at a very low cost, by trading.
