Our clients purchased this dark and dated bungalow because they loved the neighbourhood and could see the home's potential. By redesigning the main floor to create as open a plan as possible (considering the basement stairs were smack in the middle) we transformed this dated bungalow into a light, airy family home for our clients and their two young sons. Clients love mid-century and Scandinavian design so chose a a galley-style Ikea kitchen with peninsula and an eating area with a faux-marble table that opens to seat 10 under a statement mid-century light fixture. The living room was enlarged (by removing the dining room and just having one eating area at back of house) and we installed a gas fireplace with floor to ceiling 24x48 marble-look tiles so the family can hang out and watch television or listen to their impressive record collection. By relocating the basement door to the bottom of the stairs, we could remove all upper walls and give them the open plan they wanted. We also reconfigured the bedrooms and walk-in closet to allow for a main floor laundry room and better sized bedrooms for the boys. Not to mention a larger closed vestibule with heated floors, storage and bench. Funky floor tiles in the bathrooms, vestibule and laundry room give this house personality and make it fun and stylish.
