i feel your pain! one of my danes got sick a few weeks ago puked up enough bile to fill a gallon jug. thankfully, it was a throw rug so i just rolled it up and hauled it to the dumpster!

My Sunshine used to barf on rugs too. Each and EVERY single time! I couldn’t believe it. Why?! It is exasperating.

The moment I put on the beautifully clean bed sheets... you guessed it, right in the middle of the bed!

I have original schoolhouse poplar floors that have never been sanded or stained - just the original patina (they probably were waxed or oiled occasionally when school was in operation). Yep, my Pretty will throw up and no matter how quickly I can clean it up, there is always a pale spot(s) leftover. I use Old English Scratch polish on them! it acts like a stain, I have to re-apply every so often until a patina of sorts returns. Takes a long time, but eventually it does.

I swear mine go out of their way to find the worst place. Windowsills are the current favorite. There are a lot of crevices to clean, but at least it is all hard surfaces.

We had a German Shepard who would chase, catch, and eat bumblebees. She would then come inside and barf on my living room rug.

She likes to sleep on the cushions on the back of the sofa. One day, she started making those sounds and I managed to chase her off to the floor before anything happened. Dodged a real bullet that time!!

i'm not sure which is worse, barfing or urinary incontinence. i suppose i could deal with the latter easier if i had toy breeds but the occasional (thankfully!!) UTI with a 177# dog usually means a new mattress or a professional cleaning of my couch or i drag the carpet cleaner out that weighs as much as my dog. 🙄

My dogs have always run for carpet to barf. Every dog. Every time. 😄

No clue why. Obviously they strongly prefer the softer surface. I currently have one really nice rug, and so you know that is the preferred barf landing zone now. Why?!

Pooky would eat too fast and throw up. (scarf and barf). The two things that have made a difference is feeding very small amounts (easy digestion kibble only) and an elevated food dish. I guess it's something to do with the angle of her throat while eating. She will still do it if she has eaten a lot of grass in the backyard. Mostly on the carpet in the middle of the night. I've grown quite sensitive to .......that sound! Mila's a cutie!!

A friend always claimed that her dog would jump into the bathtub to vomit. What an excellent skill to teach.

My Agatha would run screaming (literally) through the house to nail the latest addition. Newly upholstered sofa, brand new rug, fancy upholstered foot stool, new comforter...you name it. She was a beautiful blotched Tabby with huge emerald green eyes and enormous ears that she used to communicate with.

Sounds like this is a universal problem. Having had many pets, I can commiserate. All these kitties are adorable. That Mila, that look!!!!! What a cutie!! I guess that is what keeps all our animals on this side of the grass. We love them.

Well ya know you do not want the barf or pee splashing back on your paws, so the rug is the best choice. Why would your provider have a rug if it was not to be barfed or peed on? Really?.?..?

We had to do that with our Chloe. It was challenging if we needed anyone to feed her when we were gone. You simply couldn’t leave much food in her dish at one time.

I am kittyless these days but share ptsd about the rugs. I have seen some really clever DIY things on the internet that people have created to slow their cat's kibble intake. Shallow boxes with cords woven around the open top so they have to use their paws to get kibble pieces to a place that they can get their head through to grab a bite.

I know you are an experienced cat mom so you've probably explored this already, but I've heard that sensitivity to certain ingredients like wheat or beef or just about anything else, can cause the upchucking. One of my friends is now feeding kangaroo meat with really good results.

Oh ugh!

I used to grab my cat as soon as I heard those unmistakable preliminary sounds and move her to the bare floor - even when it meant jumping out bed in the middle of the night 😄

I also had bamboo and outdoor rugs, which are easier to clean, but that didn't help when she did it on the beds - and I wasn't always around to catch her in time.

Mine wasn't eating too fast tho. I know they make special feeding dishes for dogs who bolt food - do they have them for cats too? I agree you might try serving much smaller portions.

And this reminded me of a funny list I read long ago about the things cats do for their humans, and one was leave squishy puddings for us to find with our feet 😂

For dogs they make feed dishes with deep ridges in them to slow down their eating, I wonder if something like that might help with cats?

In the vet clinic, if we needed to make a cat vomit, we joked that we just had to present the cat with the owner's sweater - the fancier the better. Cats love to aim their vomit on hard-to-clean objects!

So a random pic of my Maine Coon appeared and not the long post I wrote. Trying a 4th time. I've had 18 cats over the decades and know exactly the sound that makes us run to move the cat to a bare floor. Bruno passed way last month, and we now have only 6 indoor cats. They eat canned food at breakfast and dinner. And dry food is always available. They each have different taste and texture preferences. Rarely do any of them upchuck after a meal though.

We do brush them, but they also do a lot of grooming of themselves and each other, so they often hurk up hairballs.

Most of our flooring is ceramic. We used to add nice carpets over some areas, but gave up on that. Two bedrooms and the hallway are carpeted. I complain all the time (to myself). I wish we’d done ALL ceramic.

They look very well cared for - and is that their handiwork on the trash bag in the background? My little kitty loved to chew on plastic bags and I forever worried she would ingest them and choke, but she never did, AFAIK, tho I'm sure she swallowed some.

We had terrazzo floors - and I was very impressed and grateful when she couldn't get to her litterbox and did her business by the door, but seemingly carefully aimed it to land in the gap between the floor and the doormat.

i got my grandson a book about funny cats a couple of years ago when he was 7 called "I Could Pee on This". we read it together many times and we laughed hysterically every time.

Our late kitty Katya puked all the time, not from eating too quickly, but after several trips to the vet we nailed it down to a protein allergy and once she was on hypoallergenic kibble she stopped puking. Luckily we have wood floors throughout so no rugs to puke on.

Guess what I found on my guest bedroom bedding that I washed yesterday???

Not a cat, not vomit, but a dog and poo...my friend came to visit yesterday and brought her huge dog. Normally, I wouldn't allow that, but we were at the cottage where everything is due to be ripped out eventually, so I thought nothing could be damaged by the dog. The dog sniffed around the whole place, then found a spot and deposited a housewarming gift. My friend was mortified. I reassured her that it wasn't a problem, cleaned up the gift while my friend took the dog for a walk and we went on with our visit.

However, I was reminded why I no longer want to live with a pet. I'll just enjoy the pets owned by others, thank you, in their house, not mine.

Our new puppy, Lily, would pee on a large area rug in our living room, along with smaller rugs by doors. Plenty of space in the house without rugs but she went for the softer spots. She’s finally…thankfully…potty trained!👍🏻👏🏻 Obviously cats don’t require potty training, but Chloe’s puking was a forever challenge for us. One day it was on a brand new sofa.😖

We were so fortunate with our last two dogs. We never had an accident in the house with either until the very end, when the Dachshund was senile at 17. Two of my current cats, Poppy and Willie, have never had any accidents, but Bernie, the 15-year-old Maine coon is starting to occasionally forget where his litter boxes are. He's diabetic and a little senile, and all four boxes are in the basement.

Katya’s sister Nadia, who is still with us, is struggling with the normal size litter tray (as opposed to the huge one DH created from a large storage crate) we have in our city flat, where we are at the moment for medical appointments. She climbs into the litter tray, then poos over the side onto the newspaper we’ve been spreading underneath the tray for obvious reasons 🙄

Awww, old age in pets is hard to watch. But we do what we can to accommodate them.

That reminded me - I think I got the idea somewhere here on G'web - use an underbed storage box instead of a standard sized cat litter box. Definitely cut down on scattered litter outside the box.

And I'm wondering if Bernie might need a box that's easier to get to, lily?

You might be right, Carol. Or it may be the steps he doesn't want to traverse. But I'm hesitant about putting a litter box on the main floor because what would stop the other two from using it? But last week he raced up to the second floor when I opened the French doors, and he jumps on the kitchen island.

DH took a large plastic storage crate and cut off the top section, leaving sides about 6” high. Then he took the cut off top section and cut out a large rectangle on one of the short sides, from the top down to about 6” from the bottom edge, to make a space the cat could enter into. When filling the litter tray we put a large liner into the base, slide the top section into it and then fill it with litter to an appropriate depth.

The high sides keep most of the litter inside the tray, and if the cat does her other ”trick” of getting into the tray, turning around and peeing off the edge onto the floor between the tray and the wall, in fact everything is contained in the litter tray and the wall and floor remain clean.

lily, maybe Bernie is struggling with the steps? Put a litter box on the main floor for him?

Going up is much easier for cats than going down, I believe...

Easier for people with bad knees as well.
