Is the crop to center or so the subject can be seen clearly?

The crop can serve whatever purpose you want to create the image you want. It can be done to correct mistakes ... like straighten a crooked horizon (especially at the beach!) ... or it can be done to focus attention. It can be done to eliminate something in the image you don't want to include, such as the house in my chair shot above. It can be done to balance the image, to create an image that takes advantage of the rule of thirds so it's more attractive or to center it if that's what you want or to create a more perfect symmetry. It's all about shaping the image after the picture is taken to have it become what you think looks best. That's true of all the editing functions, be it changing light/darkness, contrast, color vs. B&W, exposure, etc. It can take a less than perfect photo and make it look a lot better.

Annie, I had to look it up on line, as I thought it looked so weird compared to the others growing. It is called fasciation...a mutation, disorder or growth abnormality.
