See a doctor. Get some tests. Do not get your major advice on an undiagnosed problem on the internet. Please.

I cant give any advice from experience but my friend had gel shots but still needed to have her knee replaced.

Not only should you "see a doctor" as patricia rightly suggests but it should be an orthopedic surgeon. Good luck.

The injections have been around for nearly 30 years. I think I had my first ones 20 some years ago after making an appointment with a rheumatologist and an orthopedic surgeon and getting an exam and Xrays. I had Synvisc or Hylagan shots which worked well for several years. Hyalgan is produced by extracting and purifying sodium hyaluronate from rooster combs. In addition to the injections I did PT, water exercise, low impact exercises, and medications.

When the Hyalgan ceased being effective they switched to cortisone - which didn't help at all. The injections were really a stop-gap attempt to put off knee replacement. I knew the surgery was inevitable - I was just hoping to delay it until DH retired. I had torn my medial meniscus when I was 19 while water skiing and over the years it became more painful and the joint was unstable. I had the cartilage removed when I was 23 and was told then that I would develop arthritis when I was older. Both knees became arthritic and I finally had both replaced 13 years ago.

Make an appointment so that you know exactly what is causing the pain. It might be a sprain or a torn ligament, bursitis - even gout.

I hope it is something minor.

I gotta admit - when I read the headline, I immediately thought of jello shots, and I was sure that jello shots would help relieve the pain in your knees, or at least help you not to care about the pain in your knees.

Last August I began having pain in my right knee. I thought it was a dislocated something and kept waiting for it to shift back into place. October X rays were taken and I was told nothing was broken. By January I was barely walking. February I had an injection administered by Orthopedist. He says by law he can not administer another one for 12 weeks.

Whell 8 weeks later pain returned & I have trouble walking again. MRI was ordered. Gorsh it's raging arthritis plus a torn meniscus. Arthroscopic surgery is scheduled early next month.

I am not a doctor, nort do I pretend to be one online, but I recomend over the counter Voltarain topicl gel, $14.99, for quick temporary arthritis pain releif.

Shots mask the pain. They don't fix the problem. They've found some arthritis in my knee when I was dealing with the severe calf pull I sustained last October. At this point physical therapy is working well for me. I do have some pain but It's manageable with an occasional ibuprofen. My orthopedist said I met the eligibility for Cortisone shots however they can hasten joint deterioration. Apparently gel shots are for those less active than me. With that information I decided I will wait and see what develops. Hopefully, I have years, but I will get knee surgery or replacement if and when it becomes necessary. I intend to go back for regular checks. Meanwhile I am religious about keeping my exercises up to stay in the saddle and be able to recover quickly and get back in the saddle should the need for surgery arise. I'm fortunate to have thick bones and good muscle. Being short and thick has it's advantages. LOL

My husband has arthritic knees and, for a while got cortisone shots and earlier this year, got gel shots in both knees. Some days are better than others, but he said it's bone on bone. He won't get them replaced because of the fear of anesthesia at his age. He's heard horror stories.

I've never known these shots to be anything other than one treatment on the long road to an eventual replacement. Doesn't matter the joint. As said they reduce swelling, pain, irritation--temporarily. They do not replace or restore the issue causing the pain!! Shots are not the first treatment. Most doctors will start with a med of some sort--anti inflamatory of differing intensity, IBprophen to steroids. Amount of pain, what it is doing to your quality of life etc lead these discussions. Insurance often insists on these steps before paying for surgery. IMPO they are hoping you die before they have to pay for the surgery. I saw no logic in waiting for hip surgery until I was 70+. Why not do it younger when you are better able to bounce back from major surgery???? X-Rays were deffinitive a new hip was going to happen!! Your orthopedic surgeon knows how to 'influence' the insurance companies to allow surgery.

Step 1. Get a qualified professional diagnosis.

My friend gets these gel shots into knee. I dont know how often she gets them, but she is a new person each time she does. She has been doing it for over a year.

Got an appointment for next Thursday for xrays, etc.
