Ugh sorry to hear this. It's good to hear your son stops to help you. How long will you be in the sling? How long til you can drive again? I hope you heal quickly and don't have too much pain.

So sorry to hear that. Be thankful it wasn't worse. A couple of months ago, a gal I know, her husband slipped on the ice, fractured his neck and was in the hospital for 2 weeks before he passed away. What a shock. So sad.

so sorry!! i once tripped over a concrete parking lot barrier, did the very same thing. i had to wear a sling for 6 weeks. hope you heal quickly!

When I was a young thing I broke my ankle in a unique and creative way. I have since surpassed that experience but the fun part was everyone I met told me their broken leg story which spanned theirs, their kids, their friends, their pets and even a chicken. I did not know you could splint a chicken. One guy told me to wait till I got a real cast. I had a real cast. It was one of the new fiberglass ones. I have treasured those stories. Have fun with yours.

I know at least 5 people who slipped up on the ice during our deep freeze a couple of weeks ago. 1 broken arm, 1 broken leg, 1 concussion, 1 hurt shoulder, and me landing my butt. Fortunately I bounced, afterwards I stayed inside other than to get the mail (when it came) until our street was finally plowed 10 days later.

Oh dear, what a mess. We dont realize all our shoulders do for us until we cant use them!

My poor neighbor fell on ice and tore her rotator cuff. She had to have surgery to repair it. Then she fell on it again and had to have a plate put in it.

I was lucky to have my niece and sons help me out after my shoulder surgery. Im glad your son can help!

That's bad luck. I hate icy conditions underfoot though luckily they're rare here. I've done the rotator cuff thing tripping over a tree root when running but it mended itself in due course. You don't realize how everything is connected until something goes and you discover that actions you didn't think twice about really hurt. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear this, Rose . I am so afraid of falling, which sounds silly since I hike the woods every day, but I do carry one pole. But the horror stories I read of old people having life-changing moments after a fall. Be glad(if you can) that it wasn't a hip or leg.

Ouch! I hope the sling is off quickly and you'll be good as new. I second the suggestion for Yak Trax or something similar for anyone living where ice and snow are underfoot. They are literally life savers and so easy to use. I just leave mine on a pair of easy to slip on boots so they are ready to go.

Rose, you are twice lucky and twice and blessed. Lucky you won’t need surgery, lucky you’re right handed, blessed that your sister got you to Urgicare, and blessed that your son checks on you daily and helps with what needs doing.

With a son like that and all the good wishes here, I hope your broken bone will heal quickly. When I fractured my foot while walking on a rocky beach, it was a little painful every time I walked, and it took nearly 2 months for the pain to go away even though there was no bruises. Can’t imagine pain from a broken bone - but it shall pass.

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope it heals quickly and you adapt well to you need life with grocery delivery and assistance from your son.

So scary! I'm super careful until I'm NOT! UGH! It's very sneaky that ICE! A couple of days ago, I was walking all carefully and then took a step not thinking about any ice where I was walking and suddenly I slipped in ice. UGH! I luckily didn't fall but it sure scared me!

@ Nina, those yaktrax have saved me more than once! I used to keep a pair of, slip on, Sketchers by the door with yaktrax on them for walking outdoors.

re Yaktrax. I've had them for years, but when we had the weird icy sleet that hardened into a 6 inch crust of very hard ice, the yaktrax were worthless. They just wouldn't bite into the ice. I managed with great difficulty to chop enough of a very rough path between my door and the fully cleared road, but still fell twice just trying to get to the road, yaktrax on. The ice crust was so slick that I couldn't get to my feet and had to pull myself along over it until I could get to a chopped up area near the car and pull myself up where my feet had some purchase.

Never in my life have I seen anything like that ice crust.

@laceyvail 6A, WV that sounds really awful. I use yaktrax to describe ice cleats for shoes, but I don't think their style with the wire spring-like grippers are all that great on heavy ice. I also have a pair like this for more severe ice. We don't get it often here, but my garage is detached and downhill from my house, so I have to be able to get out there and to the woodpile to replenish the stash on my porch for the woodstove. I don't know if this is the brand I have, but they look like this. This review is from the Chicago Tribune that came up when I was searching for a pic of the cleats like mine to post:

Very good reminders about the yax trax and all the others.... DH has and has worn them. I think I'll get some for next winter. I too have the biggest fear of falling.

Olychick, yes, those look a LOT better and I think would have worked with the spikes. But in my 81 years I have never seen anything like what fell from the skies, then hardened throughout my rural area in fields, driveways, yards and with the cold lasted for almost 3 weeks. The little county newspaper had pictures of deer slipping and sliding over it and a friend of mine slipped and slid down a modest slope over 20 feet to the fully cleared road, then walked the road to get back to her driveway and then tried to make it up the driveway to get back home. She made it with no injuries but it took her a looong time to get up the driveway, mostly on the side of it pulling herself from one small scrubby tree to another.

I hope never to see that type of ice again and never to need those spikes.

There have been so many falls this winter due to the temps not reaching 30 degrees for almost a month. My one fall after six years of hiking the AT every day came last February when it was thawing and I slipped and slammed my back on a tiny hill crusted with mud and ice. I didn't know what hit me, but fortunately didn't break anything, but my back was hurting for months.

Oh Rose, an injury we all hope not to have. So glad you have a son to help. My mother broke her arm also, up by the knob, but she healed with no after effects. Hoping the same for you.

I recently had a similar injury - nothing to do with ice (I live in Australia and it's still summer - sort of - here). Sling for 4 to 6 weeks, no driving for 6 weeks +, and I'm relying on food deliveries from the supermarket, and a bit of home cleaning assistance from the regional health service. I'm starting physio next week (that will be the 3rd week since my fall). Make sure you get physiotherapy: it's critical to recovery.
