Just how cold is it?

I got up this morning shiverring. Lucky I let my dog sleep in bed with me last night. The kitchen thermometer showed 5 outside and 57 indoors. So I turned my thermostst up to 80 to get the house warm. I'm still cold sitting here typing . And I'm hurting. Last week I fell on the ice and sprained my wrist and bruised my knee.Oh, I'm in Long Island NY.

8 above, but very windy blowing snow and ice on roads due to temps going up yesterday, then down freezing the melting snow. North Central ND

I'm sorry you are hurting from a fall. That is so dangerous.

When DH got up this morning, it was 4 degrees; when I got it, it had "warmed up" to 10 degrees. Currently, it is 20 degrees, and hoping to hit 30 today. I'm ready for spring...

I agree with Martin. It really depends on the fig cultivar and the age of the tree. I got 72 gallon size and 10 3 gallon "prize" little trees inside my garage. My garage is insulated but not heated. Here in my area (Charlotte) we will get temps down to 15 degrees but only 25 inside my garage. And I got about 90 or 100 inside my little greenhouse. Those in my greenhouse are older and can tolerate temps down to 25 degrees but I am just using my GH to keep them from getting below 25. I also have about 30 outside sitting tight against my house wall creating a microclimate. These trees are 2 and 3 years old and come spring I will plant them in the ground. Dennis

16 degrees in this yard. Lots of damage. Ice was too heavy. Eucs are freezer fried. Praying many plants come back from trunk or roots when it warms up. Had some other zonally challenged plants that are now dark brown and withering. Every night lately has gone below freezing. Always ice in bird baths. Heavy frost every morning. Cold out in daytime. Plants don't like this after the arctic blast. Evergreens are browner. Just an icky time of year. Going to be pruning a lot today, all the willows. Have to get a bucket truck service to take the snapped shredded branches off the top of the giant curly willow. The rest will be done today with ladders and pole pruners and hand pruners. Times like this I'm glad I overplanted because I've lost so many trees. Have 3 Oregon myrtles, now 3 years in ground but still small, that I'll be transplanting from the back south fence area, now too shady, to spots where other trees croaked.

I use a Davis Weather Station that is battery powered and solar charged. For me in S. California with lots of sunshine, this works very well for me. It will transmit information to my computer, and I also have it hooked up to my wireless router to transmit data to the web. -36 C with the windchill - that is about -26 F. Welcome to the frozen north.....(I live near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

And tonight here on Long Island it's all the way up to 21 at 6:30 pm. we might get rain on wednesday!

At 5:30 a.m this morning it was -18 degrees C. here. I think that's just below 0 F. Right now it is snowing and it's not to bad out. Just took the dog for a short walk and it was actually nice if you bundle up!

SE Wisc: It was a little warmer this morning, 7 F. Two nights before, it was -5 F. We're getting ready for another dusting of dry powder snow, not like you guys out on Long Island.

On Sunday, it was a COLD day in Chicago - The Packers won!

It was some below zero F. around here this morning ... but is warming up a bit. Some snow, too ... coming down near horizontally, this afternoon: not nice weather in which to be out traipsing around.

Glad I'm not dog-sitting, these days.

Hi mush,

Did you bundle the dog up, too?

Or carry him/her in your backpack?

Wouldn't want to get her/him too close to a fire, though, on your return: don't need a hot dog, just now.

joyfulguy, the dog has a nice warm coat and a scarf that he loves to wear in the snow. It keeps him nice and warm and also prevents the snow from forming frozen balls on his fur. Without the coat he must endure an hour or so in the kitchen when we return to thaw out!
Hope your car starts OK! and keeps on goin!
I have a friend in Embro who does not look forward to the drive each day into London during this weather. She has had too many snow days already this year!
