Comments (18)My shoulders are quite sore, I suppose from doing a handstand on the rim of the bath tub and then lowering myself to the floor. She has a woman come in each Thursday that does her laundry and cleaning around the house. I was surprised when I went in the upstairs bathroom, though it would be dusty since the neighbor hasn't been up there in years. Guess the cleaning woman takes care of it. Home health care comes in and sees that she gets bathed and she recieves noon meals from the senior center. The same woman does her grocery shopping. I saw dozens of cans of soups lined up on the kitchen counter, obviously she would not be able to reach them if they were put away. Leone and I have decided we are going to give her a Christmas present, a new lock for her front door. I will install it and it can be as secure as she wants but, we are going to have a key and I will disable the push lock on the outer storm door so we can get to the front door if necessary. We aren't going to accept any arguement concerning this gift. It will be done. I already mow her lawn, keep her sidewalks and drive clean of snow and thats O.K., I don't mind doing it but crawling in upstairs windows has to stop. Haven't decided whether or not to call her son but believe I will at least write him. She is only 79 but has always hated the outdoors and I don't ever remember her being out except to go between house and car....See MoreOh no, I'm too young to be a Great Grandmother
Comments (8)Alberta, How are you doing now? Has the initial shock warn off a bit? Try to look at it this way when it comes to you. Age is just a number, drum that in to your head about yourself. Then start thinking this way, I'm going to be a great grandmother and I'm only 62, Yup, only 62 and I can still enjoy having those littleones around me and teaching them plenty of things, especially gardening. Most great grandmothers are much older and don't really get the chance to enjoy their great grandchildren they way you will be able to. Comments (50)I appreciate this discussion, thank you for all your comments. I thought I was alone with a mystery problem. Getting rid of these sassafrass suckers or seedlings has been impossible. The roots are too deep in established beds to dig out. The later comment about an established sassafrass tree dying might be a clue as to what's going on over here. There was a really big Norway maple on the neighbor's property that they took down about 12 years ago. That's allowed a little Norway maple to flourish on our property to create a lot of shade. Also a lot of Sassafrass trees popped up on the neighbor's property, and we let one grow on our property. Ever since then the suckers come up everywhere and don't stop no matter how we slice and dice and pull out as much as we can. The little ones are sprouting up ALL OVER, by the dozens, and we've dug down 2 feet in the places where we can and we still don't get the whole root out. Use caution with sassafrass. It may be native but there are some natives that become invasive pests, and sassafrass seems to be one, along with some rudbeckia and a few others. I agree about the maples, especially if it's a Norway Maple, which are an invasive non-native. I've seen some maples here on Long Island, I think they're called swamp maples, they appear to share space with other plantings more peacefully than Norway Maples. I would never have considered round up but some compelling points are made above. Makes me wonder if the salt, vinegar and soap I spray on poison ivy leaves would work on the sassafrass suckers.. FWIW, I agree that if the things you can't change are right and there is room in the price to do the rest ... thats a pretty good place to be. I knew the minute we walked into our current home, it would be ours, more than 20 yrs. ago. We had looked at a few dozen as I recall but the search was over when we got here. Since then we've added several investment props to the pile and since last fall have been looking for a new joint for us. Found an REO that is the only house of hundreds that can tick off every item on our list. Trying to convince the bank that they should stop holding on to it has been frustraiting, aggravating, stressfull etc. but now it is finally fun. They are offering counters in less than 24 hrs. and moving proposed closing dates up. Still not moving as much in price as they'll need to yet but it is vast improvement. Guess submitting the roofing bid and the well test did the trick :-) It kinda feels like I'm the lone bidder. Its got great bones and for us, a great loc. (acerage close to where we need to be). Its way more than we need but the lot, loc. and subdivision are pretty near perfect. Some minor damage from the eviction but I'm pricing that in and will order the full blown insp. once we have a deal. I was at the auction, I know the number ... they might get it but I'm thinkin not.
