Not sure why choosing a name is so hard this time. Kept me awake last night. So many of them seem to fit her. DH likes Emma and Charlie (Charlotte). For me, Lily seems a good fit. Actually, Lily Mae…a nod to my mom and grandmother.

People should give thought to naming a pet because think how many years you will say that name multiple times a day. I have a friend who gave her puppy a four-syllable name and never shortened it. Lily Mae is so sweet and old-fashioned. Emma is sweet too. I had a dear cat named Emma. ...@ salonva, so interesting about the name Emmeline. No one for the last 100 years has been named that, but every girl was for two centuries.

Before I decided on Pooky for Pooky, my cat, I was considering Petal, as in flower petal. Pooky fits her better as she is more of a silly clown than all sweetness. My granddog has coloring like your puppy, and they named her Maple (Syrup as a middle name.) Again your new puppy is ridiculously cute!

I just got a rescue dog, a toy poodle, Lacey. She's 6 years old so already had that name. Her foster, Edna Mae, took such good care of her that I gave Lacey a middle name - Mae - in her honor. She was thrilled about it.

When I found my last cat starving under a shed in spring 24, I picked it up and brought it home and promptly named it Winnie because of "her" big green eyes and feminine face. Daughter said, uh...look again, and Winnie became Willie. Winnie is a cute name, though, and he's still feminine-looking.

Hobbitmom, I agree. Also that the name has to suit the cat. I had a kitten with one name, but when I came from college her name had changed (my family’s doing, but it worked). Later I had two kittens, siblings, and named them. One was two names I had wanted to use for a long time for that coloring (Figaro after Pinocchio‘s cat and, related, Allegro) but it just didn’t suit him, and I changed it to his true name Beau after several weeks. His brother was named to reflect his coloring, too, but it was really not appropriate and I eventually renamed him after my co-worker. Neither cat nor co-worker minded.

I saw something online called the ”back door test” for selecting pet names. You go to the back door and call out ”Lily, it’s time to eat” or ”Piper, time to go for a ride.” It’s supposed to help but 🤷‍♀️. I swear, it took me about 30 seconds to name our cat (Chloe).

what an adorable puppy!! i once took my dogs to a daycare for an overnight stay and there was a Cavalier there, a little male spitfire. he was so so cute and very bold!

4:30 huh? This, too, shall pass...

chisue, yesterday morning it was 7 so not too bad. Yeah, 4:30’s tough but I know it will pass. Last time I had a new puppy I was 11, and my parents did all the work. Sure is a lot different with a kitten, especially the potty part!

Carmelita was my one and only puppy. I don't know what I was thinking but she was adorable. Lucky for me I was retired and it was summer. Also I had Fred (miniature schnauzer) was 6 years old and was a super big brother and babysitter. He played with her all the time. I spent the first 3 weeks sleeping in a recliner with her on my lap. Whenever she got squirmy, I would take her outside. She was housebroken very quickly, making things a lot easier. This stage will pass quickly. She is just precious.

My little Frank potty trained really quickly. I took him outside every hour or more in the day. At night I set an alarm for every two hours. If he wasn’t in my sight he was in his crate. I totally skipped paper training him. I never gave him a chance to dirty on the floor.

Also, every time we went out I took his little paw and rang a desk bell that was placed on the floor near the front door. We stayed outside until he did something. When he did, he got praised. I spent about three weeks standing in my driveway in the dark three or four times a night with a flashlight.

He quickly learned to ring the bell to go outside.

He’s a happy little guy.

What an adorable pup! She really does look like a stuffed animal. So many cute names offered. Molly and Frankie are also cute names.

murraysmom, the puppy I mentioned getting when I was 11 was a miniature schnauzer (Cinder). I just adored that dog. My dad brought her home on Christmas Eve with a big red bow around her neck.

rox, that’s pretty much what we're doing and also skipping the paper training. I love your bell idea and just told DH. We take her out every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Seems to be working fairly well. So far, she’s done fine through the night without going out but we’ll see. DH is a HUGE help with her. I’m concerned about all the rain coming starting tomorrow night and lasting for a few days. How do you deal with a puppy who won’t go out in the rain?

That's the only downside to a puppy, the potty training. Luckily for me, the four dogs Ive had were all trained to go outside when I got them. The Greyhound was two, the Afghan hound six months, the dachshund was three, and the mutt was six months. All were really good throughout their lives in the toilet issue.

Cloebud, I would just put on my raincoat, carry her outside, far away from the door, put her down and wait. It will be worth it in the long run.

Funny story-my daughter got her puppy in the middle of winter. She trained Milla just like I trained Frank. My daughter spent many frigid nights in her backyard, in the snow, waiting for a potty. Milla trained very quickly, as well. The only problem was, was that Milla had been trained to potty on snow. When springtime rolled around, Milla would seek out any patch of snow to pee on. She didn’t like to go anywhere else. In late Spring, she would venture into deep bush looking for the last patch of snow in the shadiest areas, long after she had been housebroken.

She eventually grew out of that when summer arrived.

We had a small gated pen with gravel near the back door. That was *the* place to go. No go? Back inside. Go? Play time in the yard. So easy to keep clean.

I test names by thinking of the receptionist at the vet calling for "Maisie Smith" -- or my calling the dog in public.

My ancient dog book says there are four varieties of the English Toy Spaniel. (Who knew! Maybe no longer true.)

"Blenheim" is red and white. "King Charles" is black and tan. "Prince Charles" is white/black/tan. "Ruby" is red. It also says they have a taste for luxury; are gourmets; and love to sleep on expensive furniture and rugs -- haha.

pippin is the youngest puppy i've had since i starting adulting but she was 11 months old and already 140# when i got her. i used cheetos to train her to go in/out the dog door. she learned in 3 minutes. 🤣

i've always loved Cavaliers. they're like living, breathing little stuffed animals. so stinkin' cute! i'm anxious to see what you name your little girl.

Just wanted to share her name…”Lily.“ It was at the top of my list already when I talked to our grandson yesterday. He asked if we’d picked a name and added ”…because I like the name Lily.” Done! It really seems to fit her.🥰 I’ve just been calling her ”Peanut” and today somehow ”Lily Bean” came out of my mouth. Funny how we can tweak pets’ names like that. Our first Cavalier was Buddy, and I’d call him Buddrick McGudrick.🤷‍♀️

chisue, one thing I didn’t realize until after we had Buddy for a few years was the difference between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a King Charles/English Toy Spaniel. They both have the same four colorings you posted…Blenheim, King Charles, etc. Their facial features differ with English Toys having more of a ”pug” face as shown here on the left, and the Cavaliers on the right.

Great name!! I think the Cavaliers are so much sweeter looking than the English Toy Spaniel. They just look too serious to me. But then they are English.

Do you know for sure that she doesn't like going out in a light rain? I have been surprised twice now by my dogs not thinking a thing about it. Good luck in that department.
