Maryotts Arrived!! Merry Christmas to me!!

Well, that's what it felt like!!!! I received Dress Blues (bogo), Lavender Heartthrob (bogo), Tennessee Afterglow, Then I received Extravagant as the special,

and they sent me Carnival in Brazil, Jordan Verhaert, and Mister Right!!! All the ones I asked for!!And of course a min. of 3 fans on all. The BOGO ones were

7+ fans.

I was ready for them and all are in after a few hours soaking.

Here are some planted in the 'connection bed', I have to lay the slate down, so the cats don't dig in the freshly dug ground, which they might do. I can remove the

slate after a week or so and everyone is happy. Cement Kitty is keeping watch. she won't dig. LOL.

Then I have been like a 'mad' woman, and tearing out Kwanso, more down by the lake, Now that the willow tree is down, this area gets lots of sun. I was thinking

about going down the bank, ( using the Rita method) but decided against it, the English Ivy is just too thick, decided I will just keep the ivy in check with a sharp

shovel,I'm not totally crazy, they let the lake level down in October and it would have worked to put some on the slope. Anyway, Now I have lots and lots of new room!!!! I only have Wineberry Candy, NOID reds, and Prairie Blues Eyes in here now. Heres the during pic

Here's the after, I dug up the daffodils, that were in there also and will replant them, mark spaces for DL, and spend the winter making my plans, won't plant

any DL until spring.

so these daffodils, were Professor Einstein, I looked up my invoice and I had only planted 50 bulbs, 5 years ago, when I dug them up, I had 341 bulbs,!!!!

They certainly are a good naturalizer. Here is a 3 1/2 gallon bucket of the bulbs. OK, so I don't have many blooms now, you gotta take pictures of something. Right?

Here is one DL Bloom, This is Aztec Headdress and it certainly put on a different face today, I'm thinking its cause of the cool nights we are having ( high 40s)

Here's BOWIE , watching me work in the garden. He always respects the plants, and doesn't lay on any> He is a good boy!!! Cindy

Bowie is a very good boy!!! Good for you, Maryott's will make anyone feel like it's Christmas.

Ooooh! Look at the daffodils! You really got your money's worth there.

I love looking at pictures with your lake. It is so pretty. What a view. Yes indeed, cats will most assuredly dig in your garden. I had totally solved it, but DH was insistent it was too dangerous. (a few small boards with screws through it, lay them with screw side up.

I had to admit it would be me, not the grandkids who would go helter-skelter through the beds and step on them, but they surely did work well. Slate, huh? I'll try it, thanks.

I always look forward to the end of your posts because I get to see Bowie. He is such a gentleman.

Have you tried mulching with pine straw to keep the kitties from digging, it picks their little paw pads and they don't like it.

Nat, I do indeed grow Pope John Paul II and a few other hybrid teas. All hybrid teas in our climate will die back to only a few inches (or to the mulch line if you mound the base with soil or mulch). I used to grow more hybrid teas but have gotten tired of the winter dieback so I only kept a few, and PJP is one that I just had to keep because of the fragrance and sheer beauty of those pristine white blooms. Even though it gets pruned back to only a few inches tall in the spring, it rallys and will come back to bloom and be lovely all summer. My advice is to mound up some soil around the base of it to about a foot in the late fall. Next spring you will find that the top of it will be all brown and dead, but once you remove the soil from around it in the spring you should find some green, live cane. Prune it back to that green cane and it will sprout new growth that will produce flowers later. Most of my roses, with the exception of the old once-bloomers and rugosas (and a few Canadian-bred roses) will have quite a bit of dieback, but so long as there is some green cane, no matter how little, your rose will come back. Make sure you don't remove the winter protection until the ground and temps warm up fairly consistently (usually late April to early May here). Ownroot roses will come back even if the plant appears brown to the ground, because they come back from their roots. But I grow mostly grafted here because ownroots struggle in our climate, and I haven't lost a rose to winter yet. I've learned to accept the fact that in zone 4, most roses have to be pruned back fairly drastically in the spring. But no one would think by looking at them all in bloom in June that they ever had a 'haircut'....they grow rapidly and the pruning really stimulates blooming. Take care, Celeste

Merry, merry Christmas to you Julia and to each & every one here on the forum! I love the pictures of the Christmas trees you all posted. Maryl, my hubby likewise leaves all the decorating up to me and gets moody around the holidays but I'm not going to be a bah-humbug along with him! I did tons of decorating, inside and out because my little 2-yr. old grandson is at the age when he can get excited about Christmas. His little brother is due on Christmas Day! We are on pins and needles to see if he will come on Christmas or not. We thought he would be here by now since his mom has been stuck at 3 cm dilated for 2 weeks and Connor was 2 weeks early. (My son & DIL are the parents to these two)....and now my oldest daughter is pregnant & living with us, so another grandbaby in June! I have my hands full with caregiving for my mom, Connor, and soon 2 more babies. I hope I can manage to keep up with all my roses, daylilies and gardens this summer! I sure do miss all the day-to-day postings and excitement on this forum and ALL OF YOU! Have a healthy & happy 2013. Celeste

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope 2008 is a better year for you, Daisy. I am glad you will be able to have Christmas lunch with your son as I know you miss him terribly. Has he fully recovered from his accident? We had Christmas Eve dinner with DH's family last night- a real event as everyone was there except DD's BF (who works on a mine site two weeks on, two weeks off. He gets back to town on the 27th). DH's youngest brother and his parner have been living in Prague (she's a Czech and we love her to bits) but have moved back to Perth, so DH's mum had all her chicks together for Christmas. We watched an amateur documentary about MIL's birth village in Scotland (a tiny fishing village), and one of the old gents who was reminiscing at length was MIL's older cousin. It was amazing how alike they are, and every time he smiled or laughed I could see my MIL's smile :-) His Scots accent was very thick but I understood more than DH (he's not good at accents). It was quite interesting. DD came home with us and woke up here on Christmas morning. Her BF had got her the bike she wanted and had asked DH to smuggle it up here so she could have it on Christmas morning (I told her he's a keeper :-) ). The look on her face was priceless. I cooked a turkey for the three of us (loooove turkey :-)) even though it's over 100F outside, thank Whoever for airconditioning. Ate ourselves to a standstill then had naps as we were up late last night and DH had to work a short shift on 4 hours' sleep this morning. Got some good news- my StepDad's dog went missing Saturday and he was feeling quite crushed as she has been his main companion dince Mom died five years ago. It seems she may have followed some house hunters into the yard of an empty house and got shut in as they closed the gate behind them, not realising she was there. A neighbour noticed her there on Sunday and when she was still there Monday evening took some water over to investigate. She had a drink then took off for home- he followed to make sure she got to where she was going OK. SD was very relieved, as she is on medication and as temps here have been 100F+ she could easily have died. Our little Christmas miracle. Sally- I live near Perth and would be willing to give your brother a hand settling in, if he needs it and I am available (we're away until the beginning of February). My family and I are very excited to have Michael coming to my home for the holidays. My cats use to dig in my freshly dug spots, too,then I put Pine Bark mulch,and they really dug in that,until I threw some coffee grounds out in the flower beds,and then the digging stopped.They didn't want nothing to do with the flower beds no more. I also love your photos with the Lake in them.Its so pretty.LOve the end of your posts, too,so see Bowie.A perfect little gentleman.

What a pretty world! Isn't it amazing what can be moved to make room for daylilies? And I agree.... a Maryotts order is always like Christmas! How fun for you!

What a nice order of dls from Maryotts. AZTEC HEADDRESS has a nice form to it.
Are you replanting all those bulbs this fall? Wow, you do have alot to do yet.

Cindy, I always love your posts because you show your gardens. You show your newly made beds and the stages to get there, something that I wish even more people would do. Plus you have such a beautiful setting with the lake for the backround.

The cement kitty is also getting very popular in your garden and Bowie is, of course, always the star.

You daylily bed looks so nice, clean and weed free. Maryott's will
be mailing mine beginning of this month. In the meantime I
ordered from Shaw's Sunshine Gardens. I e-mailed Charles Shaw,
he seems very nice, and I'm mailing a check for more daylilies.

Love the shots! You have such a wonderful place there. I too think the cooler weather has warped my few blooms.
AZTEC HEADDRESS is certainly a pretty one, and I kind of like the look that it has on that bloom.
