Congrats. I never cut off any potential blooms, just want to see them. Several from my summer order did bloom for me. You will most likely see scapes coming up on others after you have them planted. It's been said here on this forum that Bill must have some kind of special dust that he sprinkles on his plants that cause them to scape and bloom after you plant your order. I have a few that have buds now, from my first of July planting. and I agree that it is just like Christmas.

YAY Celeste so happy for you and Merry Christmas! lol! I have eight from my order that I planted a few weeks ago that have scapes coming up on them and two of them popped open blooms today. LUV IT!! I keep trying to resist ordering again too but its really, really hard. The only one I have on your list is Shores of Time and I love it. Oh, BTW, I don't cut off my scapes either because I really want to see what they look like too. I think some people do though so they will put more energy into their roots but I am weak. ha ha! This morning I see 5 Maryott's with 5 or 6" scapes and buds from my first order received 3 wks ago.
Are these what are referred to as cheat scapes and should I cut them off? A scape is a scape but you would have to lay on the ground to see the flower if the little buds open.

I don't cut my scapes off, I want to see the bloom, it hasn't hurt any of my plants from Maryott. I did have scapes last year come up in November!!! on Incendiary. I did cut those, as I knew they would never get safely to the bloom. Incendiary did bloom early this summer and sent up rebloom scapes. that was the only one that had scapes cut off. You should at the very least allow yourself one bloom!!! I am just now getting blooms on Francois Verhaert, which was from Maryott, and I had planted it end of July. this is what I would have missed if I had cut it!!!! The scapes with the little buds did start well down in the foliage, but seemed to grow overnight. cindy

Thank you very much for the response. I can not believe I placed another order last night and forgot to add Incendiary. I suppose I can call him later as it's only 7:40 am there. I decided to buy 12 spiders, which I have no room for. So before the fans come I will have to figure out what is getting the final curtain. And since these are taller, I will need to move some around for the 50th time. FV is really pretty.

Maryott's quality is great, but the bonus thing can be misleading. On an order of almost $200, I got one bonus worth $23. I also got three weekly special bonuses--essentially, I didn't get as much on the regular bonus because I got some weekly bonuses. The website really shouldn't say that one gets generous regular bonuses in addition to the weekly bonus.

In the past, a large percentage of regular bonuses were Maryott intros. They were interesting to try, but in this climate, a large percentage didn't grow well. I think Maryott's wants feedback on hardiness, and that's why it sometimes sends several of its pricey intros.

One correction--I found a second bonus in my box. I was told that the general bonus had to be cut in half because of the shipping costs of the weekly bonus.

I know that I have gotten more than generous bonus (bonuses worth more than the order) most times I have ordered from Maryott. I have only had one plant struggle here so far and it was over this last winter, when I lost several plants because it was so long and cold here.

I almost ordered that one....(now thinking maybe I should have!). Both of my 'Circus Performer's have sent up a scape apiece and I don't have the heart to cut them off. I'm going to wait and see if they will actually amount to something.
Kathy, I giggled when I read about all the spiders you ordered and don't have a place for. That sounds exactly like me! When I ordered all the Maryott's I didn't have a clue where they were going to fit, but I made it work. I dug up some underperforming roses and planted my lilies in their places. Now I'm contemplating placing an order from Marietta Gardens because there are a few lilies I really, really want....and of course, I have no room for them!

As far as Maryott's bonuses, I have to say he was more than generous with me. If you look at my list (above) you will see that I received as many bonuses as lilies I ordered, and when I totalled up the prices of the bonuses,
they FAR exceeded what I spent. So I'm happy. As far as their hardiness here in zone 4/5....that remains to be seen, but I'm going to mulch them well for the winter and hope for the best.

When I mentioned that I got a couple extra 'babies' on my "Circus Performer" these are a couple photos of what I meant (proliferations on the dead flower stalk). I cut
them off the dead scapes and rooted them in water. Already they are ready for planting! So I actually got even more free lilies!

Yes, what I find most helpful about this forum is info on what proved to be a good northern plant. Nice to see the pictures from the South, but I know that many of them will just languish here--not necessarily die, but never bloom or just a few blooms. Some hybridizers are a red flag right away. For example, nearly all of Kinnebrew's stuff is too tender here; but we usually have very little snow cover, and that makes things worse.

get good snow cover here, so hopefully that factors in favorably. I'm a little concerned about what you said about Kinnebrews being tender....I just bought 'Eye of the Hurricane' which is my only Kinnebrew. Also, are you saying that you've had hardiness issues with Maryott's
introductions? Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Celeste, if you are new to daylilies, you will soon discover that there are hardiness issues with some cultivars of almost every non-northern hybridizer. I wish more people would post their experiences with cultivars that were problematic. NewYorkRita, for one, has related how she initially blindly bought a lot of southern cultivars and soon learned that many were unsuitable (and she is zone 6/7). Pay attention to the zones of people who post pictures. Unfortunately, I believe, a lot of posters don't want to talk about the lilies that didn't do well for them.

I have little experience with the cultivars you got from Maryott (Wild Irish and Shores of Time are supposed to be fairly good northern plants, though I had trouble with Shores of Time in its second year and am now waiting to see how it does). Maryott, like most hybridizers who live in a moderate climate, uses a lot of tender evergreens in its hybridizing. Some have not done well for me. Some hybridizers, such as Dan Hansen, readily acknowledge that many of their intros will be unsuitable for the north. Unfortunately, most of the big-name hybridizers (such as Stamile, Salter, Trimmer) seem not to test their intros in the north at all before introduction. It can take years before customers figure out that certain cultivars don't do well further north (especially 6a and above). So I guess we are all a part of the experiment. This forum can help by sharing experiences.

Thanks, mantis for your response. I guess this winter will be an experiment then! I'm a little worried now, though. I am new to daylilies in the sense that I have never bought any of what I call 'fancy' daylilies, if you know what I mean. I have grown about a dozen different daylilies here for years, but they are ones that everyone around here grows, with not much in the way of personality...but they sure are hardy and tough as nails. I have dug them up, divided them and plopped them in the garden and forgot about them and they always come back. I guess it will be an experiment in the same way as my rose obsession. I grow over 300 roses, some of which are marginally hardy and struggle here, and others which are bulletproof. I know I will definitely share my experience with the 'new' daylilies here with everyone because I am famous on the roses forum for sharing such information, good or bad.
I certainly don't want to buy something that will perish or struggle here, and I wouldn't want anyone else to either. Thanks for your insight.

Sorry, can't tell anything about hardiness as I'm new. Have Shores of Time but it was only planted this spring.
OT: I have only 3 roses, one new and guess not hardy at all (Pope John Paul II). Unfortunately I don't have time to read all the rose forum, maybe you can point to the thread I can read there? And if you grow it, tell me a few tips? Thanks

Pope John Paul here was sold as an own-root rose, which would make it very hardy. Overwintered well here with a mulch, but again, if it's own root, it could die all the way back to the ground and still come back.

I do indeed grow Pope John Paul II and a few other hybrid teas. All hybrid teas in our climate will die back to only a few inches (or to the mulch line if you mound the base with soil or mulch). I used to grow more hybrid teas but have gotten tired of the winter dieback so I only kept a few, and PJP is one that I just had to keep because of the fragrance and sheer beauty of those pristine white blooms. Even though it gets pruned back to only a few inches tall in the spring, it rallys and will come back to bloom and be lovely all summer. My advice is to mound up some soil around the base of it to about a foot in the late fall. Next spring you will find that the top of it will be all brown and dead, but once you remove the soil from around it in the spring you should find some green, live cane. Prune it back to that green cane and it will sprout new growth that will produce flowers later. Most of my roses, with the exception of the old once-bloomers and rugosas (and a few Canadian-bred roses) will have quite a bit of dieback, but so long as there is some green cane, no matter how little, your rose will come back. Make sure you don't remove the winter protection until the ground and temps warm up fairly consistently (usually late April to early May here). Ownroot roses will come back even if the plant appears brown to the ground, because they come back from their roots. But I grow mostly grafted here because ownroots struggle in our climate, and I haven't lost a rose to winter yet. I've learned to accept the fact that in zone 4, most roses have to be pruned back fairly drastically in the spring. But no one would think by looking at them all in bloom in June that they ever had a 'haircut'....they grow rapidly and the pruning really stimulates blooming.
