Slowly....we are getting there
Comments (4)Mary Lu, I can totally relate to having to drive so far. I have to drive that far or more for almost everything. With the price of fuel over $3 again there are a lot more things I can do without. The closest Walmart is a 3 1/2 hour drive! Your driveway area looks marvelous. If you water morning and evening your grass should be fine. A fine layer of straw will also help to hold moisture. At least it's warming up there which is what you need to sprout grass. Is it Bluegrass? Should be up in about a week. MeMo...See MoreHelp me take things slowly...
Comments (18)Your kitchen has really nice windows and layout! I think a light coloured non-white paint for your cabinets is a great idea. Pick a colour that you like and it will be really unique. There is a kitchen (can't remember whose) that has the most awesome powder blue cabinets, for example. I love Errant's kitchen and that look, but personally I would want something lighter for my own space. Google how to do this properly. It's a very painful process from what I have read, but well worth it. Check out the Farrow and Ball for an edited selection of colours that are fantastic (but make sure flooring will match). Dh wouldn't allow painted cabinets in my case, but if I was having fun with painting old cabinets I would look at something like Dimpse. I think matching laminate in the kitchen is a great idea, especially if the kitchen is open to the other areas. You can get leak alarms for spots where there is a risk of leaking. I would not do laminate with wood or wood look cabinets, though - just my personal bias. I would probably replace appliances with white enamel or stainless, as they need replacing. Black appliances look good when you decorate around them, but it sounds like you want a lighter look so black appliances wouldn't be my first choice. I think the current wall colour looks nice. Comments (43)Yay! thanks again for all who sign in to join in my celebration of the New Year and the new kitchen despite the few detractors...This is a great forum full of wonderful GWebbers with generous heart and spirit! jane: I am linking the site with my particular hood model. My ceiling height by the cooktop is only 7.5 ft because of the soffit. For this reason many vent hoods will not fit unless a metal fabricator cut the chimney part shorter. I priced the labor for cutting and it was almost as much as the hood itself. Finally found Euro that came with an extension chimney. I ended up installing the hood with the shorter chimney. It is 26" above the cooktop, 2" shorter than the recommended height. All their models have the specification and dimensions on-line for calculation if you have the same problem as I do. And call them on the phone to verify the measurements. They are very helpful and assured me that the 2" difference is okay. Comments (32)Thanks benjesbride and buehl...the alternative layouts are really helpful! Yes, resale is definitely a concern...we grew up in this area, so we plan to stay here. But...as we all know, amazing job offers/transfers can present themselves, so resale value needs to be part of the equation. The good news is, bc we bought a fixer upper, we have plenty of equity and room to improve bc the upper end of our neighborhood is about 200k above what we paid for similar sized homes that are renovated. For me the current layout is serviceable, just not what I would do if I had a blank slate. Because I spend 2-3 hours a day in the kitchen, it's the most important renovation for me. But, I can do all of the same things with a double oven range that I can do with a fancy cooktop and double wall ovens. I just can't decide if the more spacious setup is worth 120-130k, when I can do the existing footprint for 55-60k. That's 60k more for vacations and college, and the ability to move on from this renovation stage of life. That sounds very appealing right now....See More- 6 months agolast modified: 6 months ago
