desert southwest roses?
Comments (23)Thanks for the kind words Hoovb and walkin. I too love pomegranate and we have three varieties, you just can't beat pom. jelly. I love high country gardens and have been ordering plants from them every spring for fifteen years. If you are in the high desert most of their selection should be great but we are lower and hotter and not all of it is good for us here but it never hurts to try something new out. At both our houses we started out with bad trees dirt with burmuda naturalized in it. Getting rid of that beast has been our biggest challange but is doable. If you have a running grass lawn changing over a section at a time might be hard but if it is a fescue it can be done that way. Make sure you have some negative space in your plan. If you end up with a solid glob of plants it won't be attractive. Lawn does the job in wet climates but in dry areas hardscape and gravel can do the same thing. If you do have a hard to get rid of grass like burmuda persistance is key. I've dug it out, covered with black plastic to exclude light, and sprayed with roundup. The main thing is to keep after it. Here's another pic of two great desert plants almost as showy as roses and more heat and drought tolerant, cassia nemophylla and penstemon parryi(and my daughter). Comments (38)Find a grouping of pillows that has them all: Two print (you can use pin dot, stripe, floral, plaid, check, paisley, etc) to have two pillows of coordinating colors and then find a solid that has one of the colors in it. Use them as a grouping, one on either end of the sofa. Put the cute little cubby pillow back on the chair. It's too cute not to have a home with you. Have you been to Home Goods, Dillards, TJMaxx, Marshall, Stein-Mart in search of the much-needed pillows. Have you been to Tuesday Morning? Tuesday Morning has great goods and great prices. I got my sisal rugs for the kitchen and breakfast room at Tuesday Morning, $100 for the 6 x 9 and $125 for the 9 x 12. Granted you will not find that everyday every time you walk in Tuesday Morning but be vigilant and also look at Home Goods and TJMaxx for good rug deals. These stores are treasure hunts. I have rugs that either I got or my father got in the ME that I use in my other rooms and in my DR, I have placed a sisal over the rug to give layering and texture and to protect the nice rug from dropped food (grown men eat in that room and you know they are worse than children about dropping food). I would keep the rug you have and use a bigger sisal or jute rug under it, giving it a layered look. You can get a larger rug in sisal or jute on which to place the sofa, etc., and then place the rug you have askew over that. You need a low, bunchy floral arrangement for the table. Look at Stein-Mart for that. Floral arrangements at Michaels and Hobby Lobby are too expensive unless you find the items on sale and make them yourself. Place it on a serving tray of some kind. If you have a silver tray or a mirrored tray, a tortoise tray, etc, that will be fine. Find a cute box to place on the same tray to hold the remote controls and a medium tall candy dish to hod various colors of M&Ms or candy or even get am apothecary jar to fill with potpourri of pretty colors. If you do not have an apothecary jar or a cute box, go to a flea market. It might take 3-4 different ones before you find what you want but you will. You might also find what you want at TJ'Maxx or Target. Home Goods should certainly have anything you want or need. Just hit them at the day they have your colors. Just get one shiny thing (maybe a chrome or silver, brass box to hold the remote; get something glass and open like a candy jar and something floral-like and maybe have the tray of a lacquered material in a more masculine look). You need the masculine versus feminine in that room because of the sofa, the rugs and the chest-come-cocktail table. It is going to be a great room!...See MoreSome highlights of spring in my garden
Comments (34)What cheery greetings, thank you, Karin! Your peonies are so far ahead as mine are still in tight bud form. If that's a Maxima I think I have one! Also pink, a red double whose flower head is so packed it's amazing the stalks don't snap in half. My goodness, weather-wise you seem to have had it all already - let's hope the rest of the growing season is a bit more tame at your end. I don't want to jinx it but it seems that the long delay of any growth here, especially the emergence of hostas, may have been a good thing.... so far. I don't recall any frosts this month at all! Michelle, good that you contacted Vanessa :-)! I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of her beautiful hostas came from Crooked Creek. I don't think it's far from her place. A long list of new hostas you say? Can't wait to see what you ordered! I picked up two minis so far - couldn't resist at $20 per! I've always paid more than that around here. Happy gardening! MadPlanter, 5 acres!!! lucky you - what prime real estate for the largest hostas you can get your hands on because you will never have to move them! You must have a glorious view all around. I don't recall a frost since pips started poking through this month but only less than a handful have a bit of tearing along a margin here and there...or a small hole, one that doesn't look like a chew mark but rather a debris puncture. So far so good....touch wood, lol. Threedogsmom, GG and SM are really easy goers here and get better and better looking each year if that's possible. Not fussy and seem to enjoy the extra sunshine they receive without any ill effect. I'd recommend them anytime! Thank you for all the kind comments. I know how much I enjoy looking at all your pictures - it pleases me to no end to know you enjoyed some of mine. And it encourages me to take better pictures. :-)...See MoreWant to rip out ugly tiles, but they are in good shape. Help!
Comments (28)being there only for a short time, i would do the least possible. get a large indoor/outdoor rug for kitchen as stated above keep appliances if working properly keep counters if in good shape. you will have your 'stuff' on them so u won't see as much. why spend $$ for granite etc...?? i wouldn't even put a b/s., just paint put a big, bold piece of art on wall with double windows, it will take away from the elements you don't like... i would just minimize what u don't like and accent features that u do, like the fireplace and the view! you said u have a budget so money as an object, save it for the new build because you spend more there than you ever thought........See More- 8 months agolast modified: 8 months ago
